D5 was probably polarity protection but doesn't appear on the design. It isn't essential and won't change the sound, but it can protect components if you plugged in a power supply with the polarity reversed. Almost every design on this site uses one, you'll see it connected to the 9v, but be aware, since this has positive ground, it will need to be reversed. Why on earth did they make this positive ground? Oh well!
Since there are no polarized caps, d5 is not on the layout, and the clipping diodes aren't going to ground. Could I just use NPN transistors and switch the ground and 9v and use the layout like a normal one. Or am I missing something? Other than authenticity there's no real reason to use PNP transistors and since I'd probably just use 5087's authenticity kind of goes out the window....
I only see 17 cuts and I don't think I am missing anything :) going to give this one a try, thanks for the layout!
ReplyDeleteYes, 17 cuts it is.
Deletewhere does d5 go?

DeleteI was looking at this earlier today (I think we all know why)
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise it was positive ground that's a deal breaker!
Why a deal breaker? Couldnt you just make a small conversion board. I have done such a thing for other pos ground circuits.
ReplyDeleteI guess there's too many other muff variants that don't require the extra fiddling around the try....

ReplyDeleteI'd literally just build the Hizumitas layout, as that's exactly what you just described. It's just an npn negative ground version of this.
DeleteThere are some differencies... Hizumitas has 50k pots and no Mid shift switch...
DeleteAwesome, think I found my weekend project... Because who doesn't need another muff... Thanks guys
DeleteYeah, that would work. Plenty of room for d5 in row I too. Just flip the power. The Hizumitas is a good version with flipped polarity already.
