Fuzzhead Fx Barbarian Fuzz

 I dug out my breadboard to clear some thoughts and played around a bit. Well, I ended up with one of my top 3 fuzz circuits, Roland Double Beat. It is perfect as is, just added some minor filtering here and there. But the stock Double Beat rotary switch tonestack sucked IMO so I just tacked on the tonestack from Apocalypse Audio H Fuzz which very versitale and simple. Now this is a angry doom machine.

Got no name for it but listened to some Electric Wizard tune Barbarian the other day so...let's call it Barabarian Fuzz, ok?

ATM, the MOJO layout is verified but not the small one.

 

 

 

 

Aion Fx Antipode / Roland AF-60 Bee Gee

 Aion Fx take on a pretty rare, forgotten and old fuzz box by Roland. Some useful addons is made. A gain control is added and a series resistor before the volume control is removed for more overall output. 

I added a tone selector switch for the tone control since the factory schematic and Aion's schematic differs in that spot; the low pass filter cap in the big muff style tonestack toggles between 1nF(Aion mode) and 10nF(stock mode). The switch acts a Mid/SCoop switch.

Roland AD-50 Double Beat Wah section

 This was a request. Primary intended for the fuzz section but could of course be used as a stand alone unit.

Roland AD-50 Double Beat w. mods by Mark Hammer

 Mark Hammer tweaked one of the coolest yet most forgotten circuits a few years ago. Roland AD-50 Double Beat was a Fuzz Wah from the 70's with a fuzz with three tone settings and a "so-so" wah. He added three more tonestings for more versatility.

I built the stock Double Beat a while ago and found the normal setting sounding really good, one of the best fuzz sounds around while setting 2 and 3 sounded iether very thin or dark and dull so those settings is modified for this layout as well.

Also the stock Sustain control goes from fuzzy to very fuzzy so I added a Pre Gain control before the circuit since it cleans up really good. Original had 2SC1000 transistors which is obsoslete but really liked the sound of metal can 2N2222's in this circuit.

Tone settings is as follows: 

1. Normal Fuzz. Sounds killer!
2. Treble Boost. Original had 250pF cap which made it sounding very thin. Cap value is increased a bit to make this setting a bit more usable.
3. Treble Cut. Dark and muffled with original cap values. They are slightly reduced in this layout.
4. 2-pole Low Pass Filter. Similar in sound to setting 1 but a bit smoother.
5. Crossover Distortion. Same eq as setting 1 but has a quite rough "sandpaper grit" feel to it
6.  Scoop. Similar to scoop mode in a Superfuzz.

 

Fuzzhead Fx Stoner Bee

 Another take one the Bee Baa. Did a version a while ago called Pink Goat with a the notch filter tone setting reworked among other things.

Here after some more tinkering we have Stone Bee. Compared to stock Bee Baa it has a bit more gain and less highs in all three gain stages. Tone section is replaced by one of the best big muff tonestacks around, the one from Grind Custom Fx Ultrastoner. Since the sizzle can be a bit much for some there is a "Highs"control which blends in a filter cap across the base and collector at Q3.

 

 

 

 

Roland AF-100 Bee Baa Layout 2

 Had an old unverified layout that were pretty much trash. Got a request to build a stock Bee Baa so I drew a new layout for it.

One useful mod is to raise the overall output for the fuzz section by jumper 47k and 68k resistors connecting to the Volume control on the on the right side of the board.

 

 

And per request, a smaller layout with the Boost section removed.

 

 

 

 

Roland AG-5 Funny Cat

Slightly modernized version of a the old wierdo Roland AG-5 Funny Cat. Original had discrete op amps and a transistor emitter follower which for this layout has been changed to regular op amps.

It is also modified for true bypass.

Fuzzhead Fx Pink Goat

My take on Roland AF-100 Bee Baa. Ditched the boost switch and one of the tone settings but added two new ones. "Highs" switch toggles between stock (middle position) and two settings that cut some highs:-). The other switch named "Notch" toggles between  three settings in the twin notch circuit. Middle position has 10nF to ground which gives a full sounds with lower mids. The two other settings is closer to stock Bee Baa tone with varying degree of scooped mids. Combining those switches quite ba broad variety of tones; harsh and thin to wooly and bassy.
