Okay, apologies for the complicated answer: You need a total resistance from the 9v source of approx 8500 ohms (330 + 8200). It doesn't really matter at one point the output ties into that total resistance, but the closer (that is, the less resistance) there is between the collector and the output, the greater the volume (that is, the less resistance in the path). I've seen Roger Mayer split it, so in this case replacing each with 4,250 should preserve the bias, while increasing the volume. That isn't a realistic value, but you could probably do something like replacing the 330 with a 3.9k, and the 8.2k with a 4.7k. You want the sum of both resistors to be the same to keep the bias, and you could confirm the transistor bias by reading the voltage on the collector. I can't think of any reason why you couldn't actually switch the 330 and the 8.2k, which would put almost all of the volume through. Most transistor stages take the volume directly from the collector, and it shouldn't affect anything.
So going back to the above point....in theory, if I put the 330k in place of 8,2k,.and wired a 1 meg pot in the remaining gap.....I'd have a louder fuzz face with adjustable bias?
Take a look at the Analog Man silicon Sun Face. All the mods are there. The 250K Level will increase midrange and perceived volume. And the Contour helps with wah oscillation and also can help push midrange. The Bias control or "Sun Dial" can help give you more volume in certain settings. I usually mount the Contour and Bias externally for max tweakz.
I'm sorry for the dum dum question but... I do not see the Level 2 output on the board! Where is it supposed to go? I see a level 1 and a level 3 but no 2 :(
I see 5 cuts, not 3?
ReplyDeleteI'm (kind of) sure, but just double checking...
ReplyDeleteVolume 2 to output?
Thank you😊
Level 2 to output.
DeleteJust had a pop at this and no luck, but I think it's me because I've got no LED either 🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
ReplyDeleteuh oh, Ian, flep around the 22uf cap so the positive leg is facing south. See the updated layout above.
DeleteHaha! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'll report back
And thank you Janis krall
ReplyDeleteThe circuit has fired up! Sounds nice!
ReplyDeleteStill no LED....I'll swap the led and switch....weird.
It's lighting up and purring.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually a really nice, well behaved fuzz face. I have cheap 300ish bc108's in there and it's sounding beautiful.

ReplyDeleteA tedious question for you please..
ReplyDeleteI was planning on building another one of these... Would upping the value of the 330r resistor offer me a bit more volume?
Thank you🙏

ReplyDeleteLevel 2 goes to your output, its in the notes below the picture
