Nice one. I’ve always been curious about this and the Twin Twelve. I love that leaky, gravely, fuzzy drive sound. Currently, the D*A*M FR-70 into my Barbershop with a Jon Patton Bearhug or an Orange Squeezer is one of my favorite sounds. Aggressive but dynamic and musical.
Totally different IC. You need either a good 1044 or 7660s. the "S" is important on the 7660 cause that's the one that won't produce the audible whine you're hearing.
If you meant bypassing the onboard charge pump section of the circuit and attaching it to a 555-based voltage doubler (maybe on a daughterboard) that would probably work. But if you mean popping a 555 into the socket of this layout, you might end up overheating/frying the chip.
There is a Superbolt layout on the tagboards site but it has exactly the same problem - no tone and the switch doesnt really do anything (you can change the 120K resistor to a trimmer to make it do something but its not an ideal solution)
I guess it's not surprising when you look at the values used. The input cap and the two on the stack are all a little below average. I think I found the schematic. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H36BAvf_SRU/VZJ3F0Ny4XI/AAAAAAAABP0/JM5OTD9uUnE/s1600/Capture%2Bd%25E2%2580%2599e%25CC%2581cran%2B2015-06-30%2Ba%25CC%2580%2B13.01.24.png
I may check that out. Thanks for the Lunar Module recommendation BTW. I love that thing. I am also pretty into the Smallsound/Bigsound mini currently. It's a sexy little bastard.

ReplyDeletethe jumper on E5 needs to go up one row and connect to D5. otherwise, works great! thanks for the layout!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brian, you are fast!

Do you guys think I could get away with using a 555 instead of a MAX1044 in this circuit? I know they sometimes whine but can it hurt to try it?

DeleteYeah I know. 1044s aren’t abundant these days. Ordered some yesterday but have a couple useless 555s kickin around. Thanks

DeleteDoes anyone else find this has way too much treble and the tone knob doesnt do a great deal?

ReplyDeleteStill a great sounding pedal, just no tone control. Although, the Supreux Deux on Tagboardeffects is better
