It works OK (took me some time to figure out because the starve is reversed on the original, i.e. when the the pot is turned all the way, it's "unstarved"), but it doesn't oscillate nearly as wildly as the original and the fuzz gates/fizzles a lot more than the original, too.
Yeah, the unused pins is grounded in this layout (pin 9,11,14. Are you using the CD4049BE? If using the more common CD4049UBE you wont get as crazy sounds as intended.

Yes, it's the CD4049BE (buffered). Every layout I've seen stresses this, so that's what I bought. But the creator of this layout (http://guitar-fx-layouts.42897.x6.nabble.com/Dwarfcraft-Great-Destroyer-v2-td5695.html) says that the CD4049 - the specific name on the chip is CD74HC4049E - from Banzai doesn't work properly (which is what I have).
Let this be a warning to others trying to create this!
My local electronics store has what I hope is a proper CD4049BE.
I got the CD4049BE from the local shop, and while it was advertised as a CD4049BE, the actual chip's name is a HEF4049. It's working as intended, but to my personal taste that's not enough, hehe. It's not nearly as wild and oscillating as the one Aen from Dwarfcraft demos here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BokdMG8DNc
But as he responded to a comment from a guy who has the same complaints as me: "it's just that every Destroyer will sound a little different, and each one of those will respond to every varied input sourve differently. You don't exactly have a fuzz pedal, you have a collaborative circuit/ticket to adventure!"
It IS a highly sensitive/wildly varying circuit, people are saying everywhere. Too many factors, I guess. We'll see if it's box-worthy.
Anyhoo, thanks for a layout! My issues are definitely not the layout's fault and it could explain why Dragao has no complaints.
Yeah, I think a few of us were talking about this on an unrelated post. It’s just a finicky circuit. Apparently it is dependent upon not only the right part but auditioning many to find the one individual chip that works best. I built one and it does some of the crazy stuff but nothing like the demos I’ve seen. I think it was sesh that recommended trying the Robot Devil instead. Which I plan on trying soon.
So yeah ..made it with that chip in my link, sounded a bag of shit, as in not correct at all, wrong chip bag of shit. Use a 4049UBE, works more like the demo vids then.
I built it yesterday, but obviously something is wrong : I always have dry sound coming through, even with the volume pot set to minimum... I triple-checked my wiring, but it seems to be ok. Could it be chip-related?
I get the same, just a dry signal on second attempt with two separate MC14049BCPs. I'm pretty sure it briefly burst to life before the pots were soldered properly but now i get clean with the drive pot acting as a volume and the volume pot constant or off at minimum.
Daft mistake as ever...I'd soldered the starve 2 pin straight to the board to save space and it had come loose. Swapped for a wire and now i'm getting a lovely mad stutter.
These CD4049BE seem to be tricky to find. CD4049UBE always seems to come up instead. I've got some different chips I want to try In it... MC14049BCP and I found one called (closest) CD4049BM. BM sounds closer than UBE. Buffering seems to tame things a bit, but whether that's a good thing or not, is up to you. Anyway, I'll report back my findings 😀
It's been a while since I built one of these but the buffered motorola chip (the one with MC prefix) was the last one I bought a lot of on ebay - and it worked out quite well. The buffering can't really handle gain and so it causes this effect to chop and squeal with all kinds of weird, noisy feedback. If you turn it on and it sounds loud and broken, you built it correctly.
