Guyatone PS-024 Distortion H

Guyatone realeased some very interesting, innovative and good sounding circuits in the 80s. Since they are sadly overlooked and quite rare, Deadend Fx decided to trace and release PCBs for some of these gems.

PS024 Distortion H shares some similarities with Boss HM2 but it still differs enough to not qualify as a clone. The most eye catching feature is the 5 band graphic eq at the end of the circuit with its dedicated graphic eq IC which can be found at Ebay and Alliexpress for quite cheap.

Deadend Fx Hive build docs is avaiable HERE.

  1. Oh! I love the Guyatone PS-02X serie!
    Thank you, Fuzzhead!

  2. Has anybody tackled this one. I’d like to try the eq in a dr boogie. It’s everything to the right of the diodes up top and right of the long cut on the bottom, right? Am I missing anything?

  3. I think it's verified, now.
A guy posted pictures and demo here https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=36392.msg1265905#msg1265905

  4. Yes, i'm the guy. Verified. Straightforward build, lots of cuts and jumpers, interesting EQ, according to M5226P datasheet it can boost or cut 10db for each band. I'm not sure what it does in this circuit, and what are the exact EQ frequencies, since it's not following the datasheet's application exemple : https://html.alldatasheet.com/html-pdf/140262/MITSUBISHI/M5226P/4229/7/M5226P.html

But it works great, really pleased with this one, and a bit surprised : I'd say it doesn't sound like the HM-2 at all, even if i'm not familiar with the HM-2. In my experience a GE-7 is much more effective to shape the tone for scooped mids than the M5226P EQ. I like scooped mids, and I can't get the right tone from this circuit alone... I have to use a GE-7. I wonder why, because with a 5-bands EQ, I shouldn't need anything else... Maybe the mid frequency range isn't exactly the same, and maybe I'm too addicted to the GE-7 ?

Thank you very much for this great layout !

  5. I wonder if there could be a simple way to add some sort of Mid cut toggleswitch on this circuit ? Where in the circuit could I experiment something ? All EQ at noon it sounds a bit heavy on the mids, at least for my taste. I often have to turn Low mids, Mids and High mids controls fully CCW in order to get more precision.
