Blackhawk Amplifiers Gandalf Octave Fuzz

 Traced by evilarsen.

A great sounding octave up fuzz which has an op amp slamming a transformer and two diodes just like in an old Octavia. The transformer listed is 42TL022 but the more recent version has a different unknown part number which is supposed to work even better. A wild guess would be 42TL002?

More info at Blackhawk Amplifiers.

  1. Hi Anders, this looks ace!! Do you know if the 42TL019 would work (same as the Valhalla Fuzz)?

    1. Hey Ian. I have no idea. You could install sockets and try it out, you might strike gold.

  2. I might just do that, cheers matey!!

  3. Seems these transformers are unobtanium, closest I could find is 42TL011 and they can’t be found either. Let us know if you have and luck.

    1. I guess you can use 42TM022, 42TU011 or TL44 as well but the footprint is larger. 42TM022 will fit into the layout, not sure about the other ones....

  4. I can confirm that it "works" with a 42TL019. It obiviously has different resistance according to he spec sheet online so it probably doesn't sound the same: https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/449/Yuetone_XC-600127-1212403.pdf. I used a LM741 and a LM308N for testing. I prefer the 741 as I'm getting ducking on the 308 (but it could just be a crappy chip). Used 1N34 for D1 and D2 but I'll probably experiment with other ones to see if there is any differnce. I'd probably keep the tone as a trimmer but the blend might be a good option to have as an external pot as the variety of sound is pretty drastic depending on the setting.

    1. Cheers byrnej, I will give it a go then - I only have 42TL019

    2. Finally got round to building this using a 42TL019. The blend knob definitely needs to be external, as byrnej mentioned. As for diodes, I tried lots, and 1N4148 turned out to be the best for the octave (in my opinion)

    3. Was about to take it to bits as it isn't really amazing, probably way better with the correct transformer, then I reversed the diodes (anode to the left instead of the right) and it sounds way better. Still not a patch on the Way Huge Purple Platypus tho

  6. I test with a 42TL002 there's a little more octave than the 42TL022, a little more loud/aggressive too.
Test with a pair of D9B and D9K, D9K was a little more rounded than D9B so i keep these. I try also a pair of Bat41 and 1N4841. these can sound more clean but i like the dirty of the Germanium.
I prefer a LM308H than a LM741 it is more clearer for me.
Blend trimpot 10K works better than 100K in my case.
10K or 20K for tone but it's depend of your taste. Some Gandalf V1 was fix to 4,7K.
For me, it's best sounding in front of a dirty amp.
    Pretty close to that.

  7. Hmm... May give the D9B's a try. I ended up boxing this with the 42TL019 as it is a great pedal. Cheers Anders and evilarsen!!!

  8. I used a TL002, 741, and D9E's. Blend on a 10k.. which I paralleled a stereo jack to and you can swell into octave with an expression pedal. The tone isn't really tone so much as it's like a high end saturation from what I'm hearing but it's pretty cool all over the range of the knob so I made it a pot. Pretty great circuit
