Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret V3

Slightly modified with the internal DIP switches moved to the outside and splitted into two DPDT switches. One is for gain and one is for the tonestack (Super Bass and Super Lead modes).

Schematic is avaiable HERE

  1. You can mark this (and the DLS Red) as verified. I gotta say, though... I was disappointed in this. It's a decent overdrive, but very unconvincing as a MIAB pedal. And the volume difference between Super Lead and Super Bass modes is ridiculous—around 15dB, more than double (or half, depending on which way you're going).

    1. Thanks man. Both this and the RED is now tagged.

      Worth trying with 18v maybe?

    2. Try replacing the 2,2n cap by 220n and the 10n by 22n. This was one of my first builds, I used the GuitarFX layout and I remember being a very muddy and bassy sounding circuit so I made some of the johnk recommendations and improved a lot. The 10n cap was 100n in the other layout and that's where the muddiness came mainly. Also I replaced the 680r by 1,2k and the two 1K resistors that connect the drain to source on Q1 & Q2 and Q3 & Q4 by 680r. These changes improved the character of the pedal in a good way... and yes it sounds better with 18v.

    3. Thanks for the suggestions, Felipe! I can see how resistor substitutions in particular would really improve the sound. I also found it much better at 18V. What the pedal is missing, to my ears, is that "shattering glass" clang that old 100W Marshalls have. The DLS seems to follow the Super Lead schematic pretty closely, and other MIAB pedals certainly have it (e.g. the Marvel Drive), so I'm not sure what's happening here. (Granted, I'm not very savvy about mu-amp circuits.)
