I have built one. It actually sounds great IMO. LM301 may be hard to find, but the whole family works, LM201 or LM101, or even 308... BC549s I have are all over 500 hfe and make it sound terrible. Tested a bunch of different transistors for Q1 and gains between 150-300 worked best for me.
