I've rebuilt this from scratch with all new components and I'm still getting a tonne of hiss. Increasing the 220pf does help a bit but at the expense of some high end. I tried about 8 other different sets of NPNs with some interesting results sonically, but nothing that stopped the hiss.
Just built using this layout, sounds great!! Very flexible evolution of the Doom Stick! 2N3904’s-250’s hfe with no hiss or hum. I actually built it based on the hissing issue as mentioned above? If you ride the guitar’s volume with the Fuzz and Tone you can get some nice overdrive tones too. Also,100KB for all pots sounds even better to my ears. Thanx for another great one Fuzzhead, one thing I love about your layouts is that they’re equally balanced, that really means a lot to a bunch of persnickety electronics guys (:
OK, so the hiss was a false alarm. Egg on face. I run all of my pedals into the effects loop of my Stomp and after building that second board and finding the same issue, it turns out the hiss was coming from the HX Stomp's loop. Not there at all when I put it before the main input. It's the first fuzz i've used that's amplified it quite so much, but I guess it stands to reason with the Darlington pair in this, providing so much gain! So another verified build (or two)! Thanks!

I also have a question: how would you add a tone or gain variation with an on off on dpdt switch? For gain, I guess the resistor to ground froom Q2 as a middle position and add smaller/bigger value for more/ less gain?
Any ideas for tone variation? I am pretty new to this so thanks for any help in advance!
From what I noticed and reviews I found online, it seemed like the tone and gain controls don't do much. So just thought it might be handy to get a wider sweep with some mods. How is your experience with the pedal?

I built this and generally, it sounds awesome but there's a significant hiss when not playing through it. How was the noise on yours?
DeleteUsing sockets, swap transistors, see if that changes anything?
