I think Q4 is part of the Soda Meiser circuit, which is Devi's take on the Fuzz Master. You can flip that transistor for a more vintage accurate sound. But I think the designer intended to incorporate some reverse beta madness here. Just makes things sound more lo-fi and blown apart.
Certainly, I believe the Soda Meiser and Vintage Fuzz Master are based on devi's take on the old Fuzz Master. The Q4 placement determines whether it becomes an SM (CBE from top) or a VFM (EBC from top), with the SM lacking an upper octave and the VFM having one. Furthermore, I believe the only difference between the VFM and the Goddess Zero is whether q4 uses a 2N2907 (VFM) or a 2N2222 (GZ). Therefore, to accurately build the GODZILLA, I think it's necessary to change the q4 placement.
The Soda Meiser isn't especially octave heavy and flipping Q4 will give you a more noticeable upper octave. But I would imagine that the above is probably "correct". But, whatever sounds good to you is right, right? Haven't seen a schematic. Either orientation should work. Always a good idea to use sockets. I usually do and then yank them when boxing.
This one works but when you have both sides engaged is squeals real bad
ReplyDeleteI believe we need to reverse the orientation of q4(2n2907) (so it becomes EBC from the top).
