Electro Harmonix Clone Theory

This is it for, now. Covid restrictions were lifted here today so I'm going to take a break and try to live a normal life for a while ;-).  But here is a project of the 70s version of EHX Clone Theory which should keep you occupied for a while. An onboard voltage doubler is included followed by a 15v voltage regulator for the required power supply. The only addon in the audio path compared to the vintage units is a booster stage and volume trim before the output to cure the slight volume drop when the circuit is engaged.

Schematic is avaiable HERE.

  1. rest brother, thanks also for this jewel, I will do this and julia, I will try to adapt a 3207 to see how it goes and I have a 3007 that I take care of jealously

  2. I ordered parts for this beast on Musikding. Always wanted one. Thanks Anders. You read my tiny mind. Get outta there guy. There’s some weird sharp stuff in that place. Tempted to get out my Mexi P Bass and do my best/worst Peter Hook impression. Hope she works 🤞

  3. VERIFIED. So, I had today to myself and thought, I know, lets put myself through unnecessary pain and make a crazy huge chorus pedal! This thing is the largest circuit that I've attempted. But after some hours I got it warbling. Everything appears to be working properly. Thank you Fuzzhead. This must have been as painful to trace as it was to construct. But I have always loved a good analog chorus. Thanks again matey. I hope you're well.

  4. Oh, one thing I can't figure out... What the hell does the "cancel" trim pot do?

    1. So cool!
      Thanks a lot!

According to the build doc the Cancel trimpot can be omitted but is good to have if you experience some clock noise.

      Tagged.

  5. Yeah, I’m really excited about this one. Thanks again man.

  6. I wired up a switch and prepped my off board wiring for this build and noticed that I'm getting some volume loss. I think Q2 should be there for a bit of a boost connected to the 100k trim and then to the output. Collector is getting close to 8v and the Base about 1v. Little change when I pull Q2 entirely. I'll have to study it and see if I can work out the problem. My work looks sound. Any advice would be welcomed.

  7. False alarm. No volume issue. It is a tad noisy in the flange setting but hopefully it will be a little bit less noisy when I get it inside an enclosure. Thanks again for the excellent layout.

  8. #fuzzhead, I am still getting a squeal from this circuit. It obviously has something to do with the voltage doubler. I pulled the 1054 tonight and used 18v externally and it stopped whining. I love this effect. It's beautiful. I'll try another 1054 when I get one. Any other ideas in the meantime?

  9. I noticed D1 is supposed to be a 1n4002 and the rest 5817's in the schematic. Could that effect the sound at all? Believe 1054's are supposed to be relatively quiet in most applications. perplexed

    1. Nah, I don't think the diodes are the source of the whine.
I've never had problems with the 1054 and it is much more robust IC than 1044 for example. But there always be duds I suppose. You could try another IC?
I know there are some tricks to tame some potrential oscillation ifor those charge pump ICs by adding a small pF cap across some of the pins. But on top of my head, I have no clue which ones...:-/

  10. I tried a MAX1044 and a 7660, (linking pins 1 & 8). The noise all but disappeared. I must've gotten a bad LT1054 from Musikding? Anyway, sounds much better now. gracias amigo

  11. Anyone have a reliable source for MN3007's

    1. Thanks OT, if I buy 4 its cheaper than buying them from here in the UK

    2. The Clone Theory is up there with one of my favorite builds. But it is noisy. I just was reading a few days ago that even the current reissue is pretty noisy. Probably why we don't see many circuits based on these bones. But man it's great. Robin Guthrie must've started with this. I found Cocteau Twins in it early days.
