Catalinbread CB30 V2

Recently traced by Aion Fx, here is the 8 transistor version of CB30. It is supposed to be a very good sounding Vox-esque overdive. With 8 transistors it was quite difficult to keep the size down but it will fit into a 125b with no problem.

Schematic, tracing journal and more info at Aion Fx.

I'll take a look at Dark matter later this week.

  2. Very very cool. Interesting writeup on the Aion site. I imagine one should try to select JFET gate resistors-to-ground in order bias the drains to 1/2 V+. Right?

    1. I guess gates to 1/2 V+, not drains. But actually it looks like biasing shouldn't be an issue.

    2. Yes, very cool circuit, indeed. There is four so called "Mu Amp" stages in there which is much easier to deal with than you normal J FET stage that usually requiers some biasing. No need for that here but if you want to tweak the bias anyway, the Source resistors is the ones to fiddle with.

    3. Excellent! Thank you very much for the information.

  3. I think that Catalinbread considers themselves to have 5- & 7-transistor versions. Where might the discrepancy be? When did the shift come from the 5-transistor version? I have brand new one (last week) & a 2011, & they both sound great.

  4. I've just built it and sounds amazing!!! I think that it deserves the 8 pieces of 2N5457. It's the best Vox in a Box that I know!

Thank you a lot, again, fuzzhead!

  5. Anybody have issues with oscillation/whistling sounds. It sounds great and everything works, but I can't seem to get rid of it.

    1. Ok ignore that. It's fine when properly boxed up. Sounds great, and HELLISHLY loud. OMG I almost blew the windows out!!

  6. Would it be possible to do the Britannia off the 1776 effects web site? Seems like a really cool AC30 style circuit. It’s a runnoffgroove one, but the schematic on 1776 is really good.

    2. I actually hadn’t, no. But I’m a good half way through the one Anders put up earlier. I made one years ago from the 1776 pcb and loved it. Gave it to a friend and regretted it ever since.
