Triungulo Lab Ensemble Crunch

Here is a variation of the pre amp found in Roland/Boss CE-1. Note that the diode 1, 2 and the crunch switch is optional.

Big thanks to Lorenzo for the schematic and for verifying this layout!

  1. Hey! Finally got around to building this and it’s quite hissy, like a lot noisier than my other pedals. Any idea what it could be? Works fine other wise

    1. Should mention there’s no high pitched noise from the power converter, just like maybe a noise floor issue?

    2. Hi there!
So what kind of noise is it? Like hissy germaniums?
Have you tried it with battery and swapped the ICs?
Is it hissy in both switch positions?
Not sure what the cause could be since I have not built this myself.

    3. i'll try with a battery later on. the noise is kinda like a noise floor issue if that makes sense. swapped a few different ics but still the same. its not like a whine from a 7660. but more like a noise floor, like it works fine for the most part. i think maybe hissy is the wrong decriptive. i guess like when you max out a compressor and it raises the noise. same noise on high and lo switches.

    4. Hi Andy. Sorry for the late reply, it is pretty busy around here....
I have no idea what could cause the hiss. Even though it is a long shot you could try to sub the 1uF electrolyctic cap with bipolar caps or film/ceramics? This thing runs on bipolar power and polarized caps in the signal path can cause some noise issues...
But as I wrote...it is a long shot.

    5. Any update on this? I just built a version on PCB and I'm having the same noise floor issue with the hissing when engaged.. This is irrespective of power supplies, buffers, or the Gain knob's position.

  2. I build this exactly same but low mode is so muddy and have a lot of volume jump

  3. Great job, sounds good!
Unfortunately I have an annoying continuous beeping in the audio signal path! I tried different power supplies, no improvement! What could I try or is there a problem with the stripboard design? It beeps no matter how the switches are set, there is no noise! I also used 2 tantalum capacitors, is that a problem? I didn't have a TL071, I took an LM741, instead of a 7660S I took a Max1044 (from China). Would be great if someone could help!

  4. I'm not wrong, am I? The drawing for transistor Q1 does not fit either 2N2222,2SC900 with E/B/C on the stripboard

  5. I've made a PCB based on this schematic and compared it to this layout. If anyone is having issues with over clipping or noise, substituting TL071 with LM741 helps immensely in LOW mode. There's still a high noise floor on the HIGH mode though so I suspect there's something not quite right yet with the Mic Amp schematic. Also you can replace the 470k resistor between pin 2 and 6 of the TL071/LM741 with a 500k trimpot if you want to fine tune the gain, I find this helps with further reducing the noise floor on LOW mode. Will report back once I have more info on the Mic Amp schematic.

  6. Hi everyone!I built it yesterday and it worked but on the low mode it was hissing a lot and cracking.I reversed the transistor and now it works great! Thanks!!
