MTK Woodworks S.M.F.R Fuzz

MTK has played around with some one knob fuzzes and expanded it to a 4-knob domm/sludge machine.

Product description ;-):

S.M.F.R. Fuzz

The Stony Meat Face Ritual Fuzz combines the best parts of three of my favorite pedals. The grindy bite of the DAM Meathead, the raw low-end of the BAT Ritual Fuzz, and the phenomenal tone shaping of the Grind Custom FX Ultra Stoner. The SMFR is a fully saturated fuzz that can push the mids for growly stoner riffs or head down into the doomy thickness and anywhere between.

  1. Sounds like it would be a great mashup of circuit ideas. I can't wait to build it up!

  2. I have too many Meathead variants to begin with but I built it. Sounds pretty good. No 1kC or 500kC so I subbed a 1kB and 250kC. Usually I just go with the full 1K and might just cut that option out with a resistor and link. Might play with this some more and make a BC108 or 109 version.

Now if I could figure out how to link this with a DAM Sonic Titan without get a banshee squeal I'd be set. If you have one a Sonic Titan run it in front of this and you'll get a nice in-between fuzz-distortion sound, just make sure you got a gate to stop squeal in between playing.

  3. Did you do germanium version?

    1. No, I haven't tried using germanium transistors but any npn should work, socket it and try it out. Lemme know if you find something killer.

  5. Hey, man. Fuzzhead brought that up too. Here's what I sent him.

"The Doom switch is pretty subtle, the jump from 150pF to 2.2nF is most noticeable when the Tone and Shape are full CW. When the Tone is in the middle or lower the change is kinda lost, a larger cap would be more noticeable but muffled. I'm sticking with the 470pF."

You can experiment with it easily, maybe you'll dig it. Here's how he suggested setting it up. Connect the switch lugs 2 and 4 to L1 and M1.

"For the switch use a DPDT on/off/on switch. Replace the 470pF cap with a 150pF on the board at Q1. With a 330pf across lug 3 and 6 of the switch for meathead value. (330+150 is 480pF...close enough) and a 2,2nF-4,7nF cap across lug 1 and 4 for the darker stoner mod. Higher values might sound good too...."
