Ghost Effects take on the rare and elusive WEM Project V Fuzz. Compared to the original, some overkill filtering has been removed and Edge and Drive switches has been replaced with a tone control labelled Edge.
Information regarding mods and trimpot setup is avaiable HERE.
Now verified and it sounds massive! And the Edge control is really useful.
ReplyDeleteWill experiment with transistors though since there are some fizz in the decay with BC108Bs...
Hi Anders,
DeleteDid you ever try any different transistors with this?
Cheers
Ben
I've built this a few times - easily one of my favourite fuzz circuits - and have used just about every transistor type on hand, and none of them have sounded bad. Generally, I like the dynamic breathing room that lower hfe transistors give the circuit (e.g. PN2222, 2N4123). If you want it gnarlier, bump the gain in the Darlington pairs (Q1&2, Q5&6). Also, the mods on the Ghost Effects build doc for bigger low-end are VERY well worth it - it sounds way bigger without getting farty at all.
DeleteJust had a peel inside my favourite build of this and all the NPNs are PN2222As and the PNP is a metal-can 2N2907A.
DeleteThanks Sebastian. I’ll try that 👍.
DeleteAwesome, thanks. The original was on my to do list, but if This one has some improvements,€'d rather make it.
ReplyDeleteWhat function do those 4.7r resistors have? I can get to 4.4r and wouldn't have thought 0.3r would do anything, but would it?
ReplyDeleteIm counting 11 links? Am I wrong?
ReplyDeleteCorrect, there ARE actually 11 links. By the way, try wiring the 50k bias trimmer as an external B50k pot—it gives you access to a much wider array of sounds (and there are a LOT hiding in this circuit).
DeleteYes, 11 cuts it is, layout is updated.
DeleteAn external Bias pot is really useful in this circuit. If doing so, I highly recommend replacing the link connecting to the base of Q3 with a 1k-4,7k limiting resistor. Otherwise the transistor will be fried when the wiper of the Bias pot hits one of its outer lugs...
