Original calls for a VTL5C3 vactrol but since they are obsolete and stupidly expensive the layout calls for a home made vactrol. Just socket the LED and LDR to find the right combo.
I did this a few months ago and it's all good except for one little thing.. My depth pot had no control over the intensity of the LED. The LED always pulsed on maximum intensity but it still didn't modulate at all. I didn't put any time into troubleshooting, didn't even box it, and it might have been a problem on my end. But it's worth looking into if anyone else's does the same thing. Also I seem to remember there being more cuts and/or links than the layout shows. Sorry, I wish I could rember exactly. I should have reported months ago because my memory is shit.
I notice on the 1776 website there's an MP Modulation Add-On pcb that puts the mod on a separate little board that can be used with other delays. Might be a nice as a separate layout for adding to non mod circuits.
Hey Ben - upon reading this comment, I just dug up an old layout I did for this exact circuit that I used to add modulation to the Catalinbread Montavillian. It works quite well for this purpose and if it isn't obvious from the layout, there are two LEDs - the one coming off pin of the IC should be mounted externally as a rate LED and the second one should be sealed facing the LDR. I think I used diffused yellow and 1m dark LDR - the build doc specifies something w much higher dark resistance but I found that wasn't necessary. It works quite well, except I raised the value of the resistor between the LDR and leg 3 of the depth pot from 180k to 330k. Mostly because the stock resistance value gives you that crazy pitch bending, almost comical PT2399 mod effect and I was trying to make it sound more faux-tape delay. But if wacky is what you are going for, bend away! Also, I think I used a C100k for the speed pot since the sweep sounded more even. I connected depth 1+2 to leg three of the delay pot like the build doc suggests and it worked great. When you max the speed pot, the rate following LED will stop blinking and remain dimly on, and the modulation will be inaudible, effectively turning the mod effect off.
Also - I'd be happy to send you my layout but I'd need to redraw it since it is half of an add-on board I made that also has a JFET trails bypass switch. One based on something Yeray posted years ago on the vulcanoFX blog
Sure thing Ben! drop me a line at capitalist death cult effects at g mail and I'll respond with a pic of that layout as soon as I draw it. Shouldn't take me too long since it is a pretty easy re-work.
A very nice delay/Mod pedal. Pity I've build it last week from another layout. Otherwise I would give it a try.
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I'm curious about if you used a vactrol or a home made LDR/LED combo?
DeleteA LDR/LED. And it works beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI have some VTL5C6's do you know if it works as a replacement for VTL5C3?
DeleteI'm gonna try to build this in a week or two after I get parts. Anyone use this vero layout with success? Really stoked to try!

DeleteThanks Chris that would be great. I'd really appreciate that :-)
