Death by Audio Echo Dream 2 w. charge pump

Added an onboard charge pump to this one for 18v operation since the function generator IC XR2206P needs at least 10v to operate as it should.

    1. Sorry for missing your question...but I have a very limited access to the blog at the moment due to lots of work during the pandemic.

To answer your question which I can't....I don't have a solution since I'm not too familiar with XR2260 chip. Someone else might chip in? Maybe a cap to ground somewhere around the chip?

    Yeah, that's the spirit!

And we all should do a bit more in that area. A lot more, indeed, if we aim to stand at Fuzzhead level. He gaves immensely and gets peanuts most of the time.

  7. Just built this and it sounds great. Just one thing. Is it normal that the mod depth has to be up somewhat for the delay section to be active? With all the mod controls on 0 the delay won't work, but if i turn up the mod depth the delay controls start working, mix included. Also when I turn up the mod depth it comes in with a loud pop that triggers the delay.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hmmm, I have never played one so I don't if it is normal. Anyone that have any experience?

I'll take a look at the schematic, especially the mod section.

  9. I've been messing around with my Echo Dream II clone and I think the modulation shape switch is not wired right. The way it's wired, you don't have two different wave shapes, you have modulation on and off. I've been testing and I think the right way to wire it goes like this, considering the DPDT lug numbers as
    1 2
    3 4
    5 6

Where the layout says "Switch 1", you actually wire it to lug 3, where it says "Switch 2", wire to lug 4. 4 and 5 goes to 1 and 2, and 3 and 6 goes to 5 and 6. Nevermind about the pot orientations, they are right

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good to know the pot lug numbers is corrct, it matches the schematics I've found.

      Switch lug numbering though....
I always label them in the following order for DPDT switch:

      1 4
      2 5
      3 6

It is easier to keep the A and B poles separate that way.

      Delete
  10. Please send me your email and I'll send you some pictures of how the wiring for the DPDT should go. The way it's shown it turns the modulation on and off but in the original it changes between two different wave shapes

  11. Hello guys, right now I'm in the middle of sourcing all the parts. I have all the ic's (to072 instead of mc). My questions are:
    Can i use 1n5818 instead of 5817?
If im using poly caps, can i replace 1uf elec with wima?
Can i power it up with 18v and leave the ICL7660s outside of the board? Or do i need 9v somewhere?
Sorry for the noob questions, thank you very much for doing this!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, 1N5817 will work just fine and using 1uF WIMA caps is fine as well. If you want to ditch the onbard charge pump, you need to remove some parts and add a jumper and no...no part of the circuit itself requires 9v.

      1: replace D1 with a jumper.
2: Omit 10uF cap at the bottom left.
3: Omit the cut under D2 and omit D2 itself.

    2. thank you very very much, Fuzzhead. right now i have all the parts besides the two reverse log pots, so i started to populate the board. desided to use the charge pump after all. i have a couple of noob questions regarding jumper symbols:
the two jumpers under the PT2399. the right one goes from B19 to P19, correct? and the left one is a connection between C18, F18, G18 and L18?
again, thank you very much :)

  15. Checked the batch numbers on the photos and they advertise 0730 and 0919 - both "bad" batches. I'm thinking to just do the Madbean Memory Man instead, I've heard its better than the Echo Dream but its huge

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Echo Dream is unique and I do like it. But its really only good for lo-fi sounds. The Deluxe Memory Man is probably my overall favorite effect. As far as 2399 based delay, the 1776 is also interesting. Dunno if you've tried that one.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Madbean Memory Man it is I think, the demos sound really good for a PT2399 based delay. One of these days I will actually play my guitar too, instead of making pedals.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Space Spiral is also a nice pt2399 build.

  19. OK, here we go. Wish me luck!!!

  20. Good luck. I know somebody with a real one of these and I'm very jealous!

  21. Verify this one Anders, fired up first time and it works a treat. As Tom said, this is very Lo-Fi stuff but still a decent effect.

    1. Just checked a few youtube videos and its pretty much exactly the same - top job Anders. The funny thing is, I used a batch 0919 chip which is supposed to be a bad batch. Maybe I got lucky!!

    2. The more I mess with this, the more I realise that its not that great. Pitch Pirate Deluxe is way better imho

  22. It does what it does. It doesn't do everything. But its cool for weird LoFi sounds. I like the PP but I get a clock tick with mine.

  23. Definitely a case of DBA hype on this one

    ReplyDelete
  24. I take everything back, this thing is wild. There are some quite amazing settings. Tom, you have to build this - I don't think it's too fussy about the XR2206 (I bought batch 0919 from eBay and 0918 from somewhere in Germany and its working well with the eBay chip).

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was surprised that you didn't like it at first. In my mind you're the resident DBA expert. I have one. I built it maybe a year ago from a fabricated board. I like the Echo Dream, especially that weird modulation pattern that it does but honestly, I never use it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Managed to get hold of a genuine XR2206 from Retroamplis.com and it's a different pedal now. Gone is the dark muffled modulation, the square wave is much more pronounced and it just sounds much brighter.
It's still an over hyped pedal though!! Pitch Pirate Deluxe is an easier and cheaper build and sounds just as good (if you don't need the square wave)

      Delete
    2. I'm sure you're right. I never heard the hype exactly. I just loved the sound I heard in demos. But I may try the DPP. I do love the four knob Pirate. I always wanted a Caroline Kilobyte and a Skreddy Echo too. I wonder what's inside those guys...

  28. hi guys, i found a mistake in the layout. The 1k input resistor should go to IC1 pin3, not pin2 that it is. That made my pedal more open, without any tone loss. Moreover, with fuzz pot totaly ccw, master and delay fully cw you should now have unity gain, something that wasn't even close before. Finally, white sound and cracking noises with delay time pot maxed have gone. In fact there is a small noise but that's how the pedal should be!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can confirm the above - remember to put the resistor to pin 3 of the first IC (I used an LM358 instead of the MC-opamp).

When I wrote my comment above I thouht it was supposed to be that lo-fi, as others have noted. And I never got to box it.

But now I revisited it, it reeeally opened up the delay (obviously, now that the highs aren't going to ground via the tiny cap). And obviously it still is pretty lo-fi with a PT2399.

      Delete
  29. I'm going to have to disagree with the 1K to pin 3. I tested this on my build, and when the modulator is on square wave / full speed there is an audible ticking. This makes the pedal pretty much useless. 1K to pin 2 = no ticking

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi. I have got this mostly working (huge thanks as always for this amazing site!) I will teat out the last comment as yeah, not getting much unity from the master and nothing without some of the other vol knobs at least part dialed in. Probably my soldering. One question...should speed lug 1 be connected to nothing? I can't see it in the schematic at all. Being DBA that could be the case. Grateful for any tips

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have this pedal boxed up and about 95% there I think. Modulation sounds great and in line with the intent of the pedal which is great. I'm not getting a huge amount of fuzz from the fuzz pot though. On max it's a bit of a dirty OD I'd say. If I drop the input voltage to 7/8 volts it starts to get fuzzy. Has anyone had any similar issues when building theirs? Most of my Master pot seems to be in the last quarter or so of the dial as well but assuming that's about right and it's a cut against the other two volume knobs? It's an incredible project this though!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You don't get much fuzz, more of a volume boost with a bit of dirt

      Delete
    2. I built this layout and compared mine to several youtube videos and was content that it was correct. What ICs did you use for 1&3? I think I got my XR2206P from an ebay seller, maybe? I didn't even try to source the dual op amp and just used an NE5532 I think. I must agree with Ian in that DBA's use of the term "fuzz" here is quite open to interpretation.

      Delete
  32. Sorry for the delay and thanks for the responses. Maybe my fuzz is about there then. Definitely pushes the volume! I ended up getting the xr chip via Cricklewood (so hoping it's genuine) for IC3 and IC1 I used Motorola MC33172P via Ebay. Might have a sneaky swap out with an NE5532 and see if it.make much difference. Just recorded a low rent video of the pedal. Seems to be doing weird stuff at least. Cheers all.

    1. That will be your 7660S IC, try a different one or a 1044 instead

      Delete
    2. Thank you it did the trick, after swapping to tc1044 the noise disappeared.

Does it mean the existing 7660S chip is cooked?

      Delete
  34. Not necessarily - sometimes it is down to part tolerances, sometimes it depends on what the IC is doing in the circuit. I've had this same experience where I've had to try multiple chips from the same batch or multiple different models of charge pumps (I've had the best luck with TC7662B with this style of charge pump where pin 1 to pin 8 are connected). Not the most reassuring answer, I know, but sometimes you just have to try a bunch of stuff and see what works.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Built this today and it sounds great, but for whatever reason the pedal will not oscillate with the feedback at max, i've tried different delay chips, and upped the value of the feedback pot but nothing seems to affect it waiting for more of the other chips, but if anyone has a suggestion what it might be that would be great, many thanks :).

    1. Do you have any buffered effects running with it or just by itself, if so, run it without and see what happens?

    2. According to Ian, there are a fair number of fake chips floating around on the interwebz.

    3. Apologies if any of what I am suggesting has all ready been tried but the usual trouble shooting steps are: 1) check the orientation of any polarized components like the electrolytic capacitors, 2) inspect the underside with a magnifying glass for any tiny flecks of copper you may have left on cuts, or any unintended solder bridges, 3) double check all your component placement - I've stared at stuff for hours before I've seen what I did wrong.

I've built this one and can confirm that it works as drawn here - but I can also offer that sometimes stripboard doesn't work. Then you build it again and it works fine. 🤷 not very scientific, I know...

  36. Hi all! First time I build a vero from this site. Well, really i've been 10 years without building a single pedal.

This circuit was interesting because of the included +18v pump.

Well, easy (but tedious) build, working at first try. The effect itself is no that great, but funny to play with and get crazy echo effects, like usual with DBA pedals.

Thanks for your huge work. Will not be the last pedal I build using your layouts

    ReplyDelete
  37. I dont know why, but I made this two times and it doesnt work as intended. Fuzz and Master volume pots work but fuzz work in reverse direction and overall signal is quite. All other stuff modulation/delay doesnt work. Messing with it already 4 days checked everything a lot of times, made second one from scratch - same results. Swaped all ICs/Opams 4 times...

    1. While many (too many) boards from this site are a piece of non working and full of errors shit, I can assure this one works fine. The modulation core of this effect is the XR2206P chipset. They're expensive and hard to source and you may find many fakes on the market, most from China. We find too a 7660 and a PT2399. Replace the 7660 with a Max1044 to avoid the risk of whining / squeals, and the 2399...is well known that you need to test severa ones to get a 100% working one on this very circuit.

So, i'd first try to get a new XR2206P as with less than 12 volts and a perfect ic, you'll get no modulation..
I don't remember if I had to reverse Fuzz pot wiring, but is an easy di.

    2. Which layouts have you found "don't work"? The blog is done, free of charge, by a single guy in his free time. The small community of hobbyists contribute with varying technical ability to make a list of Do-It-Yourself layouts often from group-effort reversed engineered and unverified schematics. It's a luxury to have the frankly, very well designed layouts provided for free. If you find an error when compared to the provided schematic, comment, and hopefully the information will help someone else.

      Delete
    3. If you take a look to my posts on this site, you'll find a few "verified" boards full of errors that I commented.. Boards that in some cases have been commented before and would be "updated asap" three years ago. To build a vero from this site means to read all comments before, and anyway compare it with the schematics., because the boards are not corrected and is very usual to find even more errors that the ones previously pointed and no corrected.

I know Anders from many years on the Tagboard effects forum and I know this site is a one man's project, buy I prefer quality, not quantity.

    4. Wow, it only took you three months to go from "thanks for your huge work" to "this site is full of shit." You must be having a really hard time, eh?

My dude, if you really can't be bothered to read comments and check schematics—which is part of the discursive, communal aspect of this hobby—then save yourself the grief and just draw your own layouts instead of acting like an entitled asshole.

    5. Dear Sebastian, I know is hard to become a bootlicker and not just a fanboy, but you were able to!. Surely I've verified many more boards than you, spent many more hours than you, and for sure built hundreds of pedals more than you too, little fanboy. Yes, the echo dream was my first built on this site and was amazed, is not an easy tagboard to make. But was the only one. Megalith is not correct (but "verified", Gravity Isolator is not correct (but Verified, and to be short, of the 11 LAL boards, just 3 are correct and working as intended, verified or not.

Not to mentón pots and switches reversed and mixed as a rule of the site.

And yes, i've redrawn and corrected many boards of this site, but as people like you (Anders fanboys) prefer to butter him up to have correct layouts, you can brown nosing him, that i'll give no more corrections. Enjoy, bootlicker!

In order to ensure the QUALITY of every verified layout on this blog, I believe that Javi should be deputized as Quality Control Officer. He can wear a little hat that declares this...

THEN - and this is a BIG task, but I think he can handle it - he needs to go through ALL of the 1200+ verified layouts here and inspect them for QUALITY. Then he can comment with "JAVI APPROVED".

Help us JaviCAP, you're our ONLY HOPE!!!!
