  1. Some money to be made with this if you are good at sales pitches...ha ha.

  2. They used to sell for peanuts but now, what made them so popular!!

  3. I think we need a mojo layout for this one Anders. (Josh Scott should mention world peace on his show)

    1. This is so funny so I tend to agree.
Expect a MOJO layout next week. So start sand your op amps and order some silver solder....

  4. Yeah, let´s jump on the hype-train started by JS! I like the BM a lot, happen to own it a good time now but simply don´t get the hype. I got fond of it when I saw Crowbar 2012 using it on stage. But I really like the idea of having a "mojo-ish" version of it. Maybe someone can make a "Son-of-screamer"-version of this? Cheers and Thanks!

    1. I made a modified version that extends the "mids" knob down to around 200-300hz and it worked pretty well. It sat on Reverb for several months and finally sold about an hour after the JHS video dropped.

    2. @ Lord Ashram: Layouts without buffers will be uploaded in a couple of days. One of them will be MOJO...

Interesting. Did you tweak the 1k/220nF RC filter at the first op amp or the "High" control?

    4. @fuzzhead I had it backwards - I put the 47n and 470n caps for the gyrator on a switch to swap with a 15n and 150n set, moving the frequency from 107hz to 335hz, using this calculator: http://www.muzique.com/lab/gyrator.htm

I intended the mod to be used for a blues harmonica overdrive, and it sounds pretty dang good for that purpose.

  5. It's a crazy phenomenon. Similar to the Pedal Show influence. I had to stop watching those guys years ago. The pied pipering and idol worship is unbearable in that case. The JHS guys are funny. And it can be a good format for the history of guitar effects. But it's pretty unfortunate that Josh seems to highlight builders who don't really need any help. And his apparent resentment of the DIY community is more than a little ironic. Then again, the guitar community can be very critical and very snobbish at times. Which is also unfortunate.

    1. All I can say about Josh and his attitude about the DIY community is ... it might just have a little something to do with getting caught with his hand on the cookie jar (Hyperion/Astro mess ... Sepreaux/ROG etc). He's done a good job rebranding himself as something of a "circuit curator", but before he got found out, he was happy to snatch other people's work and claim credit.

    2. Yes. But you could argue that most circuits are based on other peoples work. Most circuits don't seem to be truly original. What's funny is, if he had been honest all along (and gave credit where it was due) it probably wouldn't have effected his bottom line too much at all. Most if not all hero's remain basically anonymous.

    3. I'm not pointing fingers in terms of borrowing a little work - that's definitely inevitable, nothing new under the sun etc - the Devi thing still rubs me wrong though, but that was more about contacting mutual distributors and dragging her name through the mud just because he got caught stealing. Devi wasn't a Saint, but she didn't deserve that one.

    4. I'm sure you're right. I've grown to love her circuits. And wouldn't it be nice if there was a place where we could share and celebrate every good idea without cynicism and solicitation? Just to talk about cool stuff and educate ourselves. A girl can dream.

    5. On that note, it would actually be pretty cool to see a layout for the Hyperi... I mean, JHS Astro mess (it's a Hyperion with a switch to reverse the orientation of Q3, a worthwhile mod) - wink wink Anders

    6. I wasn't insinuating that this wasn't a place for talking about "cool stuff" btdubs. I meant for every guitar player.

I like a bunch of the Devi stuff but recently I've been in love with the Torn's Peaker/Never Drive. Too bad you can't flip a switch to get all three options. And the Test Pattern is a mess but a fun mess. A la Wolf Computer.

    7. Just out of curiosity, I looked it over and the Torn's peeker/never drive could be worked with a 4PDT switch pretty easily. You would leave base permanent attached to the circuit and then isolate the collector and emitter and wire them in a polarity reversing configuration.

    8. Would that account for both transistors? I imagine that would cause a pretty serious pop. It might be worth a shot if I can wrap my little mind around how to wire the switch. ...I think I have a 4PDT lying around actually.

      Delete
    9. Yup - a 4pdt will account for both transistors since it's going to act like two dpdt's. Here's the best image I could find https://global.discourse-cdn.com/digikey/original/2X/2/29d728931bc82f9a414493e2e7c9c07dbea32986.jpeg

The emitter and collectors connect to the center lugs, think of this as your "in", the "out" comes from the outer lugs and should return to where emitter and collector belong in the circuit. Throwing the switch reverses the values. For a 4pdt, just use this configuration twice! As far as the pop, this is what I did to solve the Astro Mess switching and I actually don't notice one.

    10. Thanks. I may try that. Appreciate all of your input. Any favorite circuits you can recommend?

    11. Happy to help if ever possible. I'd recommend the Bluff Chill Shagpile if you're looking for something cool/ different/ broken sounding. Likewise, I'm always open to recommendations.

    12. I'll check that one out.

  6. A layout without the input and output buffers are now up.

    1. I guess as the fet is for the buffer something like a 2n5457 would be ok?

    2. A 2N5457 will work just fine.

  7. Thanks for the unbuffered layout, Anders! But there seems to be a problem with ground- and Vref- connections, could you check on that?

  8. Fellow builders. Rejoice. The top layout with the input+output buffers is verified - I just slapped one together and can only seem to play the riff from Floyd's "Money". Anders just needs to re-label the "High 2" lug at row 5 as "High 3". This circuit sounds like tens of dollars. I'll probably be boxing it up and selling it off under the moniker "Josh Scott's Eyebrow Drive"

    1. And no sooner did I hit "publish" did I realize that I built up the version WITHOUT the buffers... DOH!!!

      Delete
    2. I did build up the buffered version, and I'm getting bass, treble, level... but... no gain/clipping at all. Looking at the two layouts as drawn here, the only difference is that the drive pot 2+3 is connected to the jumper that goes to IC1 pin 1 (on the buffered layout) as opposed to DIRECTLY to IC1 pin 1 (on the unbuffered layout)... but I don't think that should make any difference? I may be almost done caring about this for today, but I'll drop another comment here if I get the buffered layout de-bugged!

    3. Are you sure got proper connections for the 220nF/1k RC filter? And is your Drive pot ok?

      Delete
    4. What kind of cap did you use before the Level 2 pad? Is that supposed to be one 1uf electrolytic or 1nf film?

      Delete
  9. Could it be that in the buffered version there are 15 links and not 16?
