Stephen Douglas Leona V1

Ok, one more layout today. This one traced by Clément who was very generous to send me the schematic.

Once again, thank you!

used MP40a (30-40 hFe) for all 3 trannies, sounds fine

i recommend log taper for all pots

  2. I think Anders would still be recovering from his eye treatment (good luck ,mate), so this is to Clement who apparently traced this pedal. would you be able to link to your schematic for this layout, please? I am trying to modify the layout to a V2 by incorporating switched input/output caps, and a control giving a choice of three clipping options. I am a bit confused wrt the two 14v zeners in this layout because Mr Douglas has mentioned "the 1N914 clipping diode in V1" when discussing the changes he made to V2. I will publish here if I manage to get the required info to clarify.

    1. You can had a 3 way clipping switch instead of the Zener diodes for sure, at the same place. The result is very useful.

      MOSFETS+1N34's / Empty Center / Zener Diodes

I've added the Germanium diodes after the transistors because I found that the difference between Mosfets and Zener is barely audible. I don't know which and how many mosfets he used for the V2.

      You can even try :
Red Leds / Empty Center / Zener Diodes which is very good too.

The center position with no clipping is a very loud boost/OD. Almost as good as the original Zener clipping.

  3. Stephen Douglas has said, when talking about differences between V1 and V2:

"Upon further experimentation on ways to tame the high end, we made a couple of capacitor changes. We’ve added 2 mini toggles to change between a .1 and .2 capacitor on the input and output caps. The input cap comes just before the first gain stage. The .1 cap leaves loosens the gain structure and adds some high end to the overall tone. The .2 cap tightens up the gain and reduces the high end. The same is true for the output cap, but with more drastic effects on the treble and bass response.

Some feedback we received related to the overall gain achieved through multiple rig types. In order to offer more versatility and move closer to our overall goal with Leona we’ve added a mini toggle with 3 diode selections. One is our standard 1N914 from Leona V.1. The second is true mosfet clipping. The mosfet has more overall volume, better cleanup and low gain settings. We are located close to NASA and frequently come across stock piles of their old parts. The last diode setting is a Motorola diode with no labeling other than the Motorola logo and “56C”. We cannot find datasheets, but whatever specs NASA requested has resulted in additional bass response and hold together really well at higher gain settings. They sound “out of this world” because they literally are!"
This is why I am asking for a link to the schematic. I am curious about the mention of 1n914 diode as opposed to 2 X 14v zeners. The toggle switch for different types of clipping is relatively easy, as is the switching of input/output caps, but a circuit diagram would be educational/clarifying.

    1. I'm sure Anders will post it as soon as he read this.

    3. Hey, just checking if the schematic is available! Happy to send over my email. Looking to add some significant mods, so a schematic would be super useful
