EarthQuaker Devices Hummingbird V2

Based on the more recent version of Hummingbird using the more common 2N6027 programmable unijunction transistor. Schematic is avaiable HERE.

  1. Finished it but am getting nothing out of depth, rate, or the switch.. Just level. I have no pf5102 so I subbed for a j201, maybe that's it.

    1. PedalPCB schematics is usually relieable but I see something fishy here? The gate of Q1 needs resistance to ground to operate properly. Just check out V1 schematic...

    2. I haven't given this one a try, but I hope to in the near future. However, I am confused about the "missing resistor", and since pcbguitarmania has, as far as i can see) a similar project with exact schematic (minus rate led and expression pedal).

    3. Thanks Pedro, I wasn't aware of that schematic. It looks that it is basically identical to the PedalPCB schematic except for the Rate LED and the series 470ohm resistor in series with the power supply. Obviusly the schematic is correct then, just cant wrap my head around how the FET is working.:-S

  2. I'd like to, if possible suggest a couple of requests,.and see if you're interested... where is a good to do that?
    Just here in the comments?

    1. Hohoho, post your wishes. It is x-mas soon!;-)
Seriously, yes, you can post them here, links to schematics would be super helpful.:-)

    2. Wonderful!!!! You've made my year great!

First up...a reverb using the big brick with adjustable dwell....

And secondly...any simple tremolos to try... something like the ea tremolo...

Thank you and have a great Xmas.

      Cheers!

    3. (I wanted to ask about the tuna melt, but wasn't sure about the schematics I was seeing...)

  3. Hi Anders, I have an interesting overdrive from an old Practical Electronics magazine from the '70's. Looks pretty cool, can I email it to you. Cheers

  5. Anyone had any joy with this yet?
I'm still on the tremolo hunt...

  6. I have built this and just like Mike Legris posted depth, rate and switch i get nothing. I also subbed the pf5102, tried 2n5457, 2n5458, J201. Comparing PedalPCB schematic this layout appears correct. I added the missing 470ohm resistor after the 1n5817 in the power section. No change. Also tried adding 100K resistor from Q1 gate to Q2 Emitter (fuzzhead20 December 2021 at 08:21 PedalPCB schematics is usually reliable but I see something fishy here? For kicks and giggles I turned the 2n6027 around 180 and now the depth and rate now act like level control. These two pots also seem to work CCW rotation, unsure if that is how they are intended to work. Using the lug numbering from the schem and layout which are alike.

Thanks, and glad you are feeling better Anders!

  7. Mine fired up straight away, only issue I've got is the rate ticking when the depth knob is below 1 o'clock. I'd say it's verified besides the ticking issue (I had the same thing with a v1

    1. Oh it also sounds fantastic BTW, great work as always!

    2. Where did you get your 2n6027? I have a feeling this is my issue because I also tried another layout with the same outcome.

    3. I got mine from jaycar (Australian electronics store) couldn't find them in my regular places but they have a good supply of them.

  8. built this as it is drawn here and it sounds awesome - I've done quite a few variations on the Repeat Percussion circuit and this is definitely a good one. Used several different DSG jfets - without it affecting the overall chop of the circuit. Good work!

    2. Got going with this yesterday....I'll be super exciting if I can get to to fly!

Just YouTube at the moment. (And a bit on Reddit)
I'm surprised I'm not one of these self-made YouTube millionaires already....🤷🏼‍♂️ Perhaps i need to review more nerf guns or something?

  10. Sad times for me with this one....I get bypass signal with working volume but no tremolo effect.

I used b549c instead of the 2n5089...but everything else was as should be...any ideas?

  11. Probably the 2N6027, hard to find a legit one. eBay is full of fakes

  12. Wait!!!! The fet I'm using is an mpf102 - not a pf5102. Could that be the issue?

    1. It is possible, MPF102 isn't a direct repleacement forPF5102.

    2. Thank you Anders. How are you doing?

I'm so happy with the swamp thang and shoot the moon anyway. I was just being greedy here 😂

I've got a few other things I'd like to put in the box.

      👍👍

    3. Doing pretty good here. Summer has arrived here so there isn't much time at the desk or at the computer at the moment

Don't give up, other FETs might work int there. PF5102 is pretty close to J201 spec wise.

  13. Works nicely but the ticking is too annoying to box it up

    1. I couldn't get this one to fly. I still think the shoot the moon is the best tremolo on here...

    2. Might give that one a go Ian, tried loads but always end up giving them away

  14. Just had another go at this but I strongly suspect I don't have a genuine 6027.... I have used sockets. I just get a bypassed signal
The volume control works.... I get very loud wiper noise on the other two controls, as if there is DC.
What is strange is that I can remove either of the two transistors and it does not affect the circuit...

  15. Ok so I got this up and running! I can say with confidence that it is not as good as the vox repeat percussion circuit!
The speed control has a dead spot down in the first 1/8 turn, and though it sounds good with the depth maxed, reducing the depth from anything other than full will introduce a ticking sound.
I imagined it would perhaps have a bit more of a volume boost because it uses a fet, but it is slightly weak volume wise.

    Vox for the win!
