Frost Giant Electronics Soma

Traced and verified by evilarsen. Thanks buddy!

Not that the part numbers for Q1 and Q2 isn't fully confirmed but it is most likely BC547/8/9 types with B suffix for Q1 and C suffix for Q2.

Product description:

Soma is a tuned version of our Massif Fuzz with the tonestack of the Doom/Sludge Metal giant The Tall Font Russian.

The Massif’s circuit was adjusted with more gain and cut but still retains the open mid response to keep you above the mix. An added bonus is we added a trimpot on the inside to adjust the bias if you decide you want a sputtery hellacious fuzz, stock it’s set for maximum sustain and gain.

Controls:

Volume – Adjusts the level output

Tone – The feel of your standard BMP tone control

Body – Shifts the low/mid low range in conjunction with the Tone knob

Fuzz – Adjusts the Fuzz level

*internal trimpot – Bias adjustment

Heavy and Saturated :: Thick and Fuzzy

  1. Thanks for the layout dude !
This one taken directly place to my pedalboard.

    BC548B n' BC108C for mine.
The finish totally inspired of Blackhawk.

    1. Hello, thanks for tracing.
Can you show the bias value/position with all knob at noon?
I draw schemo and perfboard for this. Just need more info for voltages.

  2. Thanks, Evilarsen and Fuzzhead.

There was a version of this one called "Halloween" with external bias control.

    1. Yes Alex, it's the same circuit but with the values of Triangle Muff's Tone and Output stage.

Also, there's the Shadebeast, same, with two BC109C (Fourhorsemen Massif) and values of Violet RamsHead Muff.
The 20k-22k resistors sould be replace by 33K or 39K.
This one is describe to have more gain and more scoop.

    2. Kramerian, can you share the schem/perf you drew? thx

    3. Hello Mindcrime. 1590B perf okay? You can easily add CLR in this.

  3. I just built this using 2N5088's and reversed Q1. Sounds great.. Thank you for this layout..

    1. Great, i will do a take with 5088sb, makes sense as i've seen/read 5089 on a pic but it wasn't very clear.

  4. Loving the way this sounds with MPSA13's for Q1 and Q2 (mind the pinout) For some reason im getting alot more low end (in a great sounding way!!!) with these than BC549's, 5088's, and the MPSA18's that i tried. Definitely one to socket the transistors and mess around.
I also put the Bias trim pot on an external B10K pot and im really glad i did.

  5. Built this with two BC109 and 5089, the sound is great!

    Thanks, Evilarsen and Fuzzhead.

    1. Hi. I think the tonestack is not correct on that schematic - It should be similar to the tonestack found in the Blackout Musket. The Body pot places a 470nF cap in parallel with the 3.9nF.

  8. Built this with 2n3904/2n5088/MPSA18 (shame on me for being so unmojo xD) and sounds pretty crushing and dense. I wasn't expecting it, but this might just be boxed! In that case I might make bias external since there are some pretty sweet sounds in here.

    Thanks for the layout!

    1. Thanks, i Drew scheme from this one https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iytFNfoQOPs/YTJ0wShi-_I/AAAAAAAABGk/c9ZzKLeJ_LQNCpQ85HvWFD0WAjgbxEAlACLcBGAsYHQ/s0/FGE-SOMA-PERF.png

  10. ZZoyd, my first think, like you draw. Remind of musket and grind stoner. With that, 470n is too big. imo

But, look at vero, body 3 to tone 3.
    470n, 3n9, 20K, 820R, and bias pots/trim in same junction.

    1. yes, but i took musket scheme, there is first goes body pot, after it goes cap 0.1 https://imgur.com/63A2K4B

  11. agree with you 470n too much! enough 0.1

  12. Am I missing something? Only see 9 cuts...

    1. I count 10. Bear in mind that there is a cut under the diode.

    2. Built today! Socketed 2N2222A's just to make sure it fired up. Worked and sounds great! I'm going to try different transistors based on the above comments (MPSA13's and 2N5088's). Any other combinations that have worked out?

  13. Hello, thanks for the layout. It seems really a cool one and I am trying it myself. Just a couple of questions: (1) What should I aim for in adjusting the 10k trimmer? If I am not mistaken, that's for biasing the transistor, which means what is (roughly) a proper collector voltage? (2) This one is inherently stupid, but... 1kC means antilogarithmic pot taper, right? Is is that critical or can it be replaced somehow? Not a component I keep in my drawer, and I'd gladly skip a long search in stores around here. Thanks again!
