Just built this and it works great, for such a low part build, sounds exactly like the demos, very loud and dynamic dirt with toooons of sustain. I used 2n5458 and biased it at 4.65V. I might experiment with the bias to try and adjust compression/output. However what I really want to know is if there were any easy mods to the tone stack to reduce the bass cut and increase fatness, as I find it just a bit too shrill for my rig (I've considered just removing it). Thank you!
To reduce highs and make the tonestack a bit darker, you could experiment with the 1k resistor connecting to Tone 3 and pin 5. Not sure which values that might work but you could start with 4,7k and work upwards from there. A larger value limits the range one the treble side of the tone control.
I experimented with some values, and it made a difference, but I ended up settling for the stock value - it might actually be a very useful tonestack to brighten up dark amps and I have a feeling it cuts in a band mix really well. I will end up boxing this pedal with an OD that I have yet to build (maybe Ross Distortion, maybe Hot Cake) :) Thank you for sharing these schematics!
I know i'm writing way late but maybe it's still relevant. Making the 4n7 Cap between pin3 of the IC and gain pot a bigger value might allow more bass through? Just looking at the schematic tho, haven't tried it yet.
It gets rid of some treble, so yeah, you get a darker sound and in comparison "more" bass. But i've had a go at this circuit today and making the 4n7 bigger before the IC will let more bas through (cut less bass). Try it! I went with a 1U and it sounds massive
I actually have, I replaced both of the 4n7 & 4.7uF caps with bigger values, it gives it a thicker sound for sure? Also an LM386N-3 gets longer note decay?

ReplyDeleteIt’s actually the Filter/Tone section from a Rat, if you want more Bass then make the 4n7 Cap bigger?
ReplyDeleteTru dat!
DeleteIncreasing the 1k Resistor will also get more Bass?
