DOD FX33 Buzz Box

This one have been requested a few times. Factory schematic had a few bugs (as with most DODs) so this layout is based on the schematic by Griffin Fx for their Buzz King project.

  1. Just finished this build and it's not firing up for me. The 100r resistor from 9v and 4013 are getting quite hot. I did sub a 4001, but I doubt that's it.. It's late, so I'll take a look at my build tomorrow night with fresh eyes.

    1. Did you include the cut at D-25? I added it a few hours after I uploaded the layout.

  2. I had that cut already. I went over it a few times closely to check for the usual bridges, shorts, wrong hole etc, but am not seeing any errors on my build. I even started replacing components and hardware, and still nothing.

    1. Do you have any voltages? It seems like you have a short somewhere....?

  3. Same problem as mike it heats up near the resistance 100r and no sound!

    1. Guys, add a cut at O-17, see the updated layout above.

  4. So with that o17 cut, I'm almost there..all controls work now except for "heavy" (octave). As the pot is turned clockwise, I lose output, until its dimed and there's no sound at all. I'll look into it further tomorrow but I'm thinking it's something around that cd4013.

    1. D3 could be the cukprit for the octave down section. It was the wrong way around, try to flip it.:-)

  5. It's so close. I flipped d3 and that brought in the octave.. Only thing now is that "heavy" pot. From my understanding it's supposed to act as a blend. All I'm getting is a volume cut as I turn it up, but the wet/dry ratio doesn't change.

    1. Hey, Mike, sorry for the hassle with this layout, big thanks for giving this a go!:-)
I think I 've found the reason for the weird behaviour of the Heavy pot. Add a cut at F-15 underneath the 100ohm resistor. Fingers crossed!

  6. I played this through an actual good amp and I think I hear what's happening. It seems that I'm getting wet only. I think as I turn the octave pot up, it's supposed to be blending in dry while lowering the wet signal, only there is no dry so it just sounds like the volume is dropping.

    1. It sounds like one of the circuits doesn't work at the moment. The heavy blends between either the blue box or the distortion side. I did notice some wrong values and layouts (see below), hopefully they make a difference? Changing 2k to 1k on the transistor might make the biggest change...

    3. I have your likely answer....

10K in rows T28-W28 is wrong, it should be in holes S28 and V28 (it's in the 9v pin and vref pin at the moment). It might also be 30k as they revised it on the pdf

  7. Missing 100k resistor before heavy3 ?

  8. Added the cut and 100k resistor, still no clean signal blending in while turning "heavy" pot down.

  9. I compared it with my original buzz box, and the tone is spot on.. It's so close, just something going on with that heavy pot

  10. Has anyone had any success with this layout? I've got someone wanting this or something similar built for them. This circuit sounds pretty wild!!!!
I'm assuming Mike above, had an error with his build he couldn't spot, at the time he was having trouble.

  11. Just looking, 2K and 8.2n coming off Saw 2 are the wrong way around compared to schematic (should be Saw 2>2K>8.2n>GND). Try that?

    1. The order doesn't matter, it will work both ways around.

  12. Also R24 is 1k not 2k on the schematic (can't see anything in the pdf to say they changed the value after). That'll be the resistor at C-22-J-22.

    1. Thanks for catching that. Resistor value changed.

    1. Hi Chris, I'm just about to have a go at this build, just for the hell of it :) I'll implement the changes you've suggested and see how it goes. Cheers!

    2. 10K at W28/T28 needs to stay since that is R36 in the schematic. It is a part of the voltage divider for the Vref. However, thanks for noticing the updates in the schematic. R30 used to be a 0ohm resistor (jumper across K21, S21). Subbed it with a 10k resistor.

  16. Right.... I built this today.....

The distortion side works, the octave side doesn't. Probed it and got a good clean signal up to the 4013 chip. I'll investigate further but head scratching to be honest. Can't see any wrong with the layout at the point.

  17. Got it working!!! Must have been an unseen short, gave it another pass witg a knive and works as intended.

Layout above is fine, but sack off the 51k, it does nothing and isn't on the linked schematic either.

    1. Excellent!
      Tagged.

The 51k resistor was present in the earler schematic but I can see that the it was removed for the latest schematic.

  18. G'day Guys, just finished this build! Had a sound and it was obviously not working right. Moved the 10k on the right back to it's correct spot, as per the comments, then noticed I'd missed the 1nF cap on the left of IC2. Added that cap and it fired up!! Only problem now is oscillation. Any ideas on how to stop it? Cheers!

    1. I get a squeal from the buzz pot if it's used. Not figured why yet, or if it actually just did it originally (it's noise machine anyways so can believe it did).

    2. Funnily enough, this circuit will be for a Harsh Noise artist, not a guitarist :) So, I guess it's perfect , lol! Oscillation will stop with the Tone control rolled off on the neck pickup. The Octave tracks best with this setup. It also stops with any buffered bypass pedal in front of it. Must be an impedance thing. I have the same issue with an OCD build.

    3. I think its just the build too. Mines for someone who used to oen one ao I'll probably get the word from him when he's tried it.

    4. I never said...the client said it sounds exactly like his old buzz box! Just use a buffer before it otherwise you get squealing

  19. how will the Linear taper pots, will affect/differ against the stock pots, that are W taper? that by the way, the later are a bit hard to source

    1. I've built it as above and is fine, person I made it for said it was pretty much like the original they used to have.

    2. awesome!! Chris, thanks!!! thats all i wanted to read! so i might give it a go with the Linear tapers!

    3. Sound. I keep pondering about building me one.... only thing it misses off the original is some of the buffer stage. Use it after a buffer and it'll be fine (if you don't it'll squeal on some of the extreme settings).

It juuust fit in a 1590BB and I mean just.
