Holy Island Audio Cannibal Pride Drone Synth

"Gwion of Holy Island Audio builds awesome stuff and, included in the package if you purchased the debut release from Gwion's band, Smothering, is a DIY PCB for a three oscillator drone synth called the Cannibal Pride. This is that synth, and it sounds KILLER - keep in mind that, as this is a sound source and not an effect, there is of course, no input."

  2. I assume if I don't want to use the CVs I can just omit the those jacks along with their 1n5817s and 1ks and the pedals operation won't change?

    1. I"m assuming that should be just fine. When I first built/tested this, I didn't add the CV jacks until after I verified that I had output and all three oscillators functioned.

  3. Sorry, but, what value would the resistor on 16,E - 16,H be?

  4. "CLR" stands for Current Limiting Resistor and it can be anything from 1k-10k depending on how bright you like your LEDs to be. 4k7 seems to be what most folks use but I am practically blind so I use a lower value like 2k2.

  5. Are the red caps a must or can I use green caps instead?

    1. The capacitors marked in red are just to show which three affect the frequency ranges of the oscillators. Use whatever cap material you have - ceramic, polyester, mylar, etc...

  6. Great little circuit. Oscillators sound great. I cannot get the CV inputs to work. Has anyone had any success with the CV inputs?

    1. When I built this, I tested all three CV inputs with a dual wave LFO I found on experimentalists anonymous (a suggestion from NJGTR in the comments of the Wasp VC Filter). They work, altho, to TBH, the oscillators are pretty crazy without anything feeding them any extra oscillation. I remember thinking "this is definitely different, but not so interesting that I couldn't do without it"

      What are you plugging into your CV jacks to test them?

    2. I've tried with a baby-8 sequencer and a beatstep pro. That dual wave LFO has been on my to-build list for a while, I'm going to build it this weekend and try with this circuit.

    3. Hey there - I've been doing a lot of synth and drum machine stuff and had some questions about the beatstep pro. My main drumbox is a drumbrute so I'm all ready a fan of Arturia. Would you mind answering a few questions I have that most of the demos I've watched don't really cover? I can post my email here, as I have all ready done before, if that's okay?   7. This is a beautiful noise machine. Is there a way to slow the 'pulses' down a little more.
    I love the circuit as is but if I could just make it a little slower it would be perfect

    1. The rates of the individual oscillators are determined by the three capacitors that are shown in red on the drawing (with values of 47nF, 220nF and 1uF). If you raise the values of these caps it should slow everything down overall. However, since 1uF is all ready a pretty large for a film box cap, you probably will want to use a bipolar electrolytic capacitor with a value of maybe 2.2uF or 4.7uF. All of this is untested on my part, but according to the notes from the designer, this sounds like it will achieve the effect you are looking for.
