Fjord Fuzz Freia

 A BIG thank you to Chris of Capitalist Death Cult for digging this one up!. And also a big thank you to Daniel of Fjord Fuzz for sharing the information how to build a clone.

So, what is it, then? It is basically the preamp section of the mighty Shin Ei/Honey Univibe. Some minor changes has been made so it can be used both as a preamp and a great sounding fuzz when the Bias and Gain is turnned clockwise.

Most medium gain NPN silicon transistors should work fine but they might give different character since it is quite a small circuit. So socketing is recommended.

  1. Tag it. Great tones out of this little guy! Clean boost to fuzzy goodness. Used PN2222A transistors but gonna socket others to test. Thanks again for your awesome work. Cheers

    1. It really is. The original IG post from Fjord that prompted this was basically "I'm super proud of how cool this sounds and also amazed at how little tweaking was required to turn the univibe input into a fuzz pedal"

  2. Request a vero of the valve wizard pt2399 flanger?

  3. Sounds great! What a cool little circuit.

  4. This looks very cool - is there an actual schem anywhere?

    2. This was originally prompted by an Instagram post that Fjord did, saying that the Freia was just the input section of a univibe with a few mods. Based on this info, I did a layout using RG Keen's schematic and posted. Fjord gave me a couple notes on it (mostly that the 1uF output cap needs to come from the collector of Q3) and Anders and I came up with our layouts based on that info. So this may not be 100% Fjord's circuit, but I'm confident that it is close enough.

  5. Nice - I'll see if I can backwards-breadboard it from the layout.

  7. Fuzzhead, any chance you could do a layout for this (or know what it's a version of)?

  8. nice! i breadboarded this one a while back off the schematic he posted, but I could never get it to sound right. just built this one, and it's pretty spot on. thanks!

  9. Built this one and it sounds great. Can you share the schematic for it?

  10. I have found scheme here: http://revolutiondeux.blogspot.com/2012/07/cloning-uni-vibe-neovibe-easy-vibe.html

  11. there is strange 47 k in parallel Gain pot 100kb?

  12. Hi, maybe a silly question but I´m new into this. So, in your bottom notes.

    D 1N5817 any suggestion how it might be replace it?
    Gain: 100KB. It means a pot linear or log? What "B" is stands for?
    Bias: 1KC. What it exactly means? it is a resistor? What "C" is stands for in these case?
    Volume: 500KA. What "A" is stands for?
    Input to Gain 3. Sorry but I can´t get where it should be.
    Volume 2 to output. Where is it?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Jonathan- the 1N5817 can be replaced by a piece of wire - or is just a polarity protection diode to protect the circuit from using the wrong kind of 9v adapter. If you're confident it will only get center negative power you're fine without it.

      The A B and C designators are for log, Lin, and anti-log. A=Log , most of the pots action will be at the beginning. B = Lin - the pots action will be evenly distributed. C= Anti Log - most of the pots action will be at the end. Depending on what the pot is controlling, some of these will work better in certain circumstances. For the most part Log will usually be for volume and anti Log will often be for distortion.

      Hope this helps

  13. 1N5817 is a reverse polarity protection diode. You could use a 1N4001 or1N4007 or even just leave it out and put a jumper in but if you plug in your power with the wrong polarity you will do damage.
    Gain : 100KB is a 100K Linear pot.
    A= Log
    B= Linear
    C= Reverse Log
    Input to Gain 3 means your input jack wire goes to the number 3 pin on the gain pot.
    Volume 2 to output means your output wire goes from pin 2 on the Volume pot to the output jack.
    You have to consider your off board wiring, 3dpdt footswitch.
    I would suggest doing a little research. Maybe try a search for effect pedal offboard wiring. Hope this helps steer you in the right direction.

  14. Gain 1 should not be grounded otherwise all the signal will be sent to ground. The original pedal has signal even with gain at zero. Just like the clean knob inside Analogman Sunfaces.

  15. This is a nice sounding fuzz pedal. I may experiment some with transistors. I used BC547's. Better as a fuzz than a boost. Thanks as always for the layout.
