Moonn Electronics Big Mess Pi

Nils from Moon Electronics just released a cool DIY project based on two LM386 audio amps with a russian style clipping stage with tonestack sandwiched in between. And it has a Havoc switch!

Nils own words on it HERE along with build doc and schematic.

I will be offline for a couple of weeks from now on but I'll try to catch up things when I'm back.

  1. This looks fantastic, sadly I don't have any germanium diodes.

  2. I’d say this is verified. All controls work as expected, but it’s incredibly noisy even when the vol and gain are barely on. Doesn’t sound quite right to me so there might be something a miss.

    1. Might be how it is. Acapulco golds two LM386s and it's noiser loud as hell (van actually blow ypir amp input if you're not careful).

What's it sound like? Was tempted but couldn't find any audio examples anywhere. Kinda imagine it's an acapulco but with gain and tone control

    3. Looks like Loud should be A 100k, shouldn't make a huge difference . I always use 386n-3 or n-4's for these kinds of builds because they are less noisy. I'm gonna build one tonight, see how it sounds.

  3. I built one and it doesn't sound good. Mine isn't noisy but it sounds weirdly misbiased. Not much gain and the tone control "works" but sounds weird. I dunno, I went over my build and it seems right, I'll look again.

  4. Also, should be noted I used d9v diodes because I'm out of d9k's. Maybe that's the issue, I'll try some d9e's when I get a chance.
