I built this one; something is up with the drive control. It appears to have no range at all, no matter the setting, it just sounds fully cranked. It actually sounds pretty good as is, but the drive pot does nothing
Yes, the gain control looks odd. As drawn in the schematic it is only varies resistance between Q2 and Q3 and the value is very low for that purpose. Lug 1 could possibly be tied to ground for a normal gain control but then it would be in parallel with D1 and D2 which could cause problems...
