Electro Harmonix V1 Triangle Big Muff 66#5 - 1969 perfboard version

Can't believe I haven't posted this one yet since it is one of the better vintage big muffs I built and played. In the very early days EH, component values varied quite a lot so this layout is based on Kitraes schematic HERE. There is also some notes and info the component values.

Trannsistors is 2N5133 which is almost impossible to source nowadays. Some Big Muff owners have measured their transistors (out of circuit) and reported those varied quite a lot but most of them were in the 150-300 hfe range. 2N2222, 2N3904 or BC547B might be good candidates but a personal favorite is ME4003.

Here is two layouts, one standard and one "Triangle Style" mojo layout. Both are verified.

  1. Just checking, but you only have 17 cuts that I can spot, not 18.

  2. Yep, 17 cuts it is. Thanks for the heads up.

    1. Yes it is but you can use a SPST on/on and leave one of the lugs empty.

  6. Thanks for this will get on it over the next few days, I was wondering if there would be any chance of you doing a jext telez white pedal layout at some point? Thanks for all you do!

    1. Funny you mention the White Pedal. I think I have an unfinished layout of it somwhere that I forgot. I will complete it and post it when I find it.

    2. Thanks! I’ll be looking forward to seeing it! I wonder how easy it would be to add the fuzz switch to the vox conqueror/white pedal like the original amp, from looking at the schematics of both and it looks like a switch that makes the bases of two of the transistors go high but I might be wrong!

  7. So, tried building this, and no sound. Debugged my build, and started comparing the layout to the '66 Triangle (and the other Triangle layouts you have posted) - and I *think* I spotted something awry... In the other Triangle builds, Vol 3 is connected to the collector of Q4 through a cap: in this layout, Vol 3 is connected to the Base of Q4 through a cap. In addition, the 680nF cap in the 2nd to last column (connected to the collector of Q4) doesn't seem to connect to anything. Should the connection for Vol 3 be moved down to Row N, just above Tone 2?

    1. Gee, what have I done here?!
Yes, your observations is correct. Tone 2 is connected to vap going to the base of Q4 and Volume 3 is connected to cap going to collector of Q4. Layout is now updated.
      Sorry about the hassle...:-/

    2. No worries: made the changes and it's definitely fuzzing out. Any suggested mods to reduce the bass in the circuit? It's really (really) bassy.

    3. First thing that springs to mind is the input cap connecting to the base of Q1. A 100nF (or lower) cap should tame the bass quite a bit.

  8. Thanks for the layout just wondering what transistors people went with and what hfe. Range

    1. There is 4x ME4003 in mine. Hfe 250-300.

    2. Thanks FuzzHead The closest the I’ve got is some bc549 with a hfe of about 350 sound pretty good with those but it a little brittle sounding but that may just be the nature of the beast .I will order some transistors with a lower hfe and try that

  9. build with mojo layout, find out [Sustain.2> 680n> 10k should be connect to Q2 Base] but the empty row on layout, I simply add jumper to Q2b, than works like a charm, thanks the beauty layout.
