Not sure. Maybe a Pre gain control before Input? Or replace one of the 1M feedback resistors with a pot?. I doubt a simple gain control between the gain stages will work since they seem to interact with each other in more than one way...
Okay, Ian! I had to look this one up & build one after I saw you mention it was your favorite fuzz. I tried 2N5088's and was a bit underwhelmed. I slotted 2N5089's (and will probably audition a few others) but it definitely got louder & is a pretty sweet fuzz.
It has a really nice full sound and can imagine this would be pretty great with a boost or going into a Rat. I almost wish this site had some sort of "TOP 10" list because I would have totally overlooked this one if I hadn't see your posting. Thanks to fuzzhead for posting & thanks to Ian for recommending!
