Frost Giant Electronics Black Gold

 Traced by moushh.

This thing looks quite wild. With the gain control set at minimum, you have the stock Acapulco Gold gain setting. Turn it up and you'll have much way much more gain avaiable... The Bright control is an welcome addition, a simple adjustable low pass filter.

  1. Great work & thanks for posting this one! I didn't even know this existed until I saw this posting. I can confirm - it works and it is loud.

I used LM386L's from Tayda and was able to dial in a sweet spot that takes the Acapulco to another level and sounds great...but if I max the dials it squeals (but I feel like the Acapulco is pretty noisy when it's max'd). I'll play with it a bit more and I have LM386N's around here somewhere that I may swap just to see if it changes the profile. I am going to put this head-to-head against my Acapulco Gold tomorrow and will post an update after I compare the GAIN and NOISE.

  3. Wow, talk about loud, and a quick build to boot. Wasn't aware of this one but I like it alot. Thanx

  5. Is there a schematic for this?

  6. it works, its loud and very bright in tone. dont like the short sweep of the volume ( only last 25% or so seems to do something ) circuit is good

  7. Did you use a log or linear volume pot? Just asking as I've added this build to my list :)

  8. logarithmic. i dont like the sound of this acapulco layout. i think the glass jaw is more versatile.

  9. For what it is worth, using a C taper for the 1k gain boost pot has a little more even of a sweep. Also - if you want it to scream, you can replace the jumper that goes between the IC and the gain pot with a 10uF cap. Anode to pin 8, cathode to the row where lugs 1+2 are.

  10. Picking up radio stations loud and clear when I roll back on the Volume pot, may want to shield the input jack on this one if in close proximity of broadcasting stations...

Replacing the jumper w/ 10uf was squeal city, don't think running a 386 x100 gain works well with this circuit...

1k linear starve pot works well here, and interacts with the bright pot a bit. If you crank the bright and starve the pedal some, it starts to chop and stutter like some fucked up tremolo.

  11. LM386's -3 and -4's also give me the dreaded gated output decay in this circuit... JRC386D's function properly, work better in the Acapulco Gold as well.

  12. Well shit, seems like the LM chips are taxing the 9V rail pretty hard. Seems the decay issue is a result of the 100uf ripple cap, 16v doesn't have enough reservoir capacity and can't keep up. 25v 100uf got me sorted.
