Sadly, the 6 stage phaser section isn't included in the schematic but the fuzz section itself is still wuite unique. This one is already verified by Ian!
This one is up and running! Sounds really nice, very smooth silicon fuzz. I have one small problem with it, it's not very loud. Even with the volume on max, it's still quieter than unity. Any suggestion? I used b25k pots, and some 2sc945's I had on hand, hfe around 280 for each of them. I used some unmarked rec diodes I pulled out of a pair of old Realistic intercoms, I wouldn't expect those to mess with the volume but who knows. Thanks!
I love reusing salvaged parts. Very cool. You probably already thought of it but check the pin outs for you transistors. Also, knife your tracks. If you socketed hem stick some different trans in to test.
Same here! Reusing old stuff is neat. For sure! I double checked the pinout and swapped some higher gain (bc108's in the 600 range) and lower gain (unmarked npn's in the 150's) and no change. I went over the tracks one more time with my xacto and also no change, So i'm at a bit of a loss. I might try to up the 10k resistor to the volume pot, maybe up to 22k or something higher. I think I'll socket it and see what I can come up with. I'll report back!
Ian seems to have some kinda strange sorcery with troublesome circuits. He seems to get virtually every DBA circuit working for example while the rest of us throw components at the wall. But he knows what he's doing, so this thing should work properly. I always eliminate every anomaly when troubleshooting. So it could be the diodes. Chances are Anders will see this at some point and come to the rescue.
Hey all! Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate the help! I'm gonna keep the 10k resistor and swap the vol pot for a 100k. If that doesn't help, I'll take out the diodes and socket them so I can try some different combos and see what helps. I'm really loving this circuit, it's sounding great and it sounds killer when cascading it into a muff like Ian said^, I just need a smidge more volume to toss it on my board.
Better now! I couldn't get any wet signal to pass with a 100k pot so I kept the 25k and did a diode swap. I finally settled on some zeners and its sounding great! At max volume it can hold its own against my other fuzzes so I'm satisfied.

DeleteA larger volume pot might help, maybe 100k-250k ish?

ReplyDeleteI think I used 1n4004 or 7 (same thing anyway). Its not mega loud but defo over unity. Works great stacked with another Muff fuzz
