Catalinbread Montavillian Echo

 Time to start rolling again...

Here is a discontinued PT2399 based delay from Catalinbread with some filtering I haven't seen anywhere else. Schematic is avaiable HERE.

  1. Welcome back! This is interesting! I really want to make a delay....

    1. Just do it! This is basically the same size as a Big Muff!

  2. Very nice! I have all these parts in my stash and could use a nice echo/verb...hmmm lol

  4. I built this but it only give me the clean signal. Knobs dont seem to have any effect.

    1. I have checked the layout and I can't find any mistakes.:-/
Have you checked the usual suspects like solder bridges, misplaced components, another PT2399 etc?

    2. Yeah i scraped out the tracks and checked for continuity. Ive got everything in the right place and I've swapped out the pt2399 and got nothing. Checked jumpers, cuts, etc. The only thing i subbed on the build was 10k's for the 12k's but i figured they were close enough to still work.

    3. I'm also having this issue, originally I built it with a TL072, but got some OPA2134s and more PT2399s from another supplier today and put them in and still having the same issue. I audio probed all over the circuit and there seems to be signal on the right pins of the 2399 but the knobs arent changing anything and doesnt seem to be outputting any delayed signal. Regulator is supplying 5v fine, can't seem to find any misplaced components or bridges either. I did notice that the signal disappears after the 360k and comes back off pin 1 of the opamp to the output so maybe theres something going on with that

    4. update: PT2399s are apparently pretty finicky, put in yet another one and it started working great! Excited to box this and put it to use! love the deterioration on the repeats and the cut knob really warms it up nicely

  5. Welcome back!
I Will build this too !!

  6. Nevertheless, if you make a cut on G10 it will start to work perfect... and sounding great.

    1. Awesome! Thank you for the tip, Karl!
I have other projects to finish first, but I think I am going to build it very soon : I like the way it sounds in some videos...
      Do you enjoy yours?

    2. Love it! I suspect it's going to replace my Deep Blue.

  7. Hi,
I built it today, and it sounds gorgeous :)
Thank you Fuzzhead for the great layout, and thank you Karl for spotting the G10 missing cut!

  8. It's very colorful, but one of the best PT2399 delay I built.
I am considering building another one with a couple mods :
    - a killdry switch (so I get only the WET signal);
    - a Hipass filter in the delay path;

I'd need a little help, if anyone is willing to :)
    - am I right assuming that for the Kill Dry, I could add a switch before R3 (12k)?
    - Where to add a Hipass filter, and would a simple RC filter do the trick (without making the wet sound too low)? Should I try putting it between C4 and R6? Or is there already any HPF happening before going into the chip, where I could put 2 caps on a switch?

  9. Built it. Works great. Sounds freaking fantastic! Though it was pretty picky about the 2399 used. (Tried 4, all working in my 2399 tester pedal but 3 of them wouldnt work here.) The cut knob is super uesful for either nice clear, bright digital sounding delays or more murky analog sounds. It decays super nicely, quite a different voicing from other 2399 delays ive used. Feedback is a little excessive, oscillate just after 12 o'clock. Still very useable but it can get out of hand if your not careful. Also i swapped the TL072 for either an 062 or NE5532(cant remember which) as the 072 was clipping slightly with my Noventa Jazzmaster(p90s), it didnt have this problem with my Tele though you might not need to swap depending on your guitar. I also subbed all the 12k resistors for 15k as thats all i had on hand. It sits a little above unity but i made up an output cap from a 470nf and a 150nf making 620nf which is a little low so i guess thats why. Ive ordered some 680nf if that doesnt fix it ill just add a trim pot to the output and match the output that way instead.
Overall, it might possibly be my favorite delay build yet! Easily as good as the Deep Blue and the tone/cut control has more function than the Wampler Faux Analog Echo. Im going to play around with adding modulation to it(probably Aquapuss daughterboard)

    2. I subbed for 10K and.. it is a boost. I changed the 1M restitor from output to ground to around 890K but that didn't do much. I also changed 2 of the 10Ks one at 12 the other at 15 and still loud.

    3. Hey man. Dont knowbif you managed to solve this but its the 12k on the top left. Controlling the dry signal volume. Increasing it will make it quieter, decreasing it will make it louder. Dont go too low otherwise youll kill the delay and just get a stupid loud signal. Put a 220k in series with it and you have a dry volume control!

  10. I wonder if the, problem with a lot of 2399's acting weird is the diode to ground on pin 4. That's the digital ground and on every other delay I've built, it goes directly to ground. I also usually use a 47u on the pin 2 connection to ground.

Either way this one looks cool.

  12. Thank you, fuzzhead, for another very good layout!
I like the sound of this delay, even I had more complicated PT2399 based ones.
Anyway, I would like to modify it in order to eliminate the oscillations (or, better, to obtain them only with the repeats pot maximized). Any idea how to do this?

    1. I guess you could try an audio taper for the Repeats control. If there is still too much oscillation you can try a 25kB pot or a limiting resistor between Repeat 3 and the board.

  13. Thank you, fuzzhead! I will try both ideas :)

  14. I used a 50k log pot for feedback, as fuzzhead suggested, and it sounds OK now :)
    Thank you, fuzzhead, again!

  17. So how picky is this circuit are we talking about with the PT2399's? I've tried over 15 different ic's (and from different production batches) and all I am getting is the clean signal through this one. I cannot hear any delay or any of the pots doing their duties. Certain 2399's will create background noise, but that's about it on my build. I'm pulling my hair out on this one.

  18. Its definately not 15 ICs, picky!
Id be more inclined to think theres something wrong with your build pal. Can you post any top and bottom pics?

    1. I've done the standard scraping rows and re-flowing solder troubleshooting steps after double checking my component placements. I'll upload a top and bottom when I get the chance, thanks!!

  19. Fired up first try! I did this one and the disaster transport and honestly I like this delay a bit more. The repeats get super dirty, and I wish there were more repeats before it goes into full blown chaotic feedback, but honestly the delays are pretty pristine!

  20. Hello, thanks for your designs, they are great, could I ask you for this please? https://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=114973.0

  21. I have built two of these and they worked flawlessly. My latest two are having the same "only clean signal" issue. Has anyone figured this out?

Btw, I tested leaving out the diode from Pin 4 on the 2399 and it didn't help.
