A bit late, but anyway... I'm building this one, but I'd like to try a mod. Has anyone put clipping diodes in the feedback loop? In such case, does it sound good?
The madbean Fireaxe is a modded version of this circuit. There are three 1n914 clipping diodes (asymmetrical?) on the 1st op amp stage, as well as a master volume and some other tweaks: https://madbeanpedals.com/projects/_folders/DistBoostOD/schematics/Fireaxe.gif
I had never heard of this circuit before a couple sleepless nights ago. Threw it together as a lark. Very nice sounding boost/pre. I added a couple of the Madbean mods for fun. I likee. Keep in mind that the opamp is doing most of the heavy lifting in this circuit so each one sounds and behaves a little differently. Madbean uses the 4580DD and that one might sound the best to my ear. Thanks. Oh yeah, the pinout for the FET is incorrect. The 2SK30 and 2SK117 are the DSG type (top to bottom).
Verified with 2SK30 & 4558. Love the sound, keeper for sure!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot! Tagged.
DeleteWhat low current alternative to the 4558 works best in this circuit? I wanna use it inside a guitar, with 18V supply from two batteries.

DeleteWhat does the switch do?
ReplyDeleteBass cut. Very useful if you use the pedal as a lead boost.
