Hi fuzzhead, do you think you could take look at the Faze Filter from Deadastronaut. The demo sounds awesome. Don't know where else to ask on the blog, sorry https://deadastronaut.wixsite.com/effects/faze-filter
The 9v layout is good. I used 2n5089 and gt320, although a bc550b and 70hfe si pnp yielded similar results. The 42TM018 seems to be fine. Anyone care to share their knowledge of the comparison between 300 -3,400 Hz of the 42mt018 vs the 200-15,000 Hz range of the ty-141p? Would you expect to hear more low from the ty141 and at what range is the max frequency response arbitrary unless you're a dog? Lol
lol. I suspect that it is some mojo and marketing involved here. 48TM018 is very close spec wise, I doubt any human can hear any difference. I know builders that built a stripped down version WITHOUT the transformer and the difference was neglible according to them. "A bit more high end with the transformer...maybe."
Fuzzhead, I just made the 9V one and it works great. I set it up with a separate 24v charge pump that I can turn on with a toggle switch. The extra headroom is necessary if you want to push the gain on one of the toggle setting.
The only issue I see is the size of the TY-141P on the layout. It's WAY bigger than a 48TM018 or similar transformer. It's 5 columns wide and 5 rows tall--each connection will have a empty row between them. Here's how I set mine up: https://imgur.com/a/A8bqk4m I also expanded it to 23 columns to give plenty of room, but 22 may also work, though the transformer is pretty large.
Send the switch wires to another 3PDT foot switch instead. Use the other pole to do LED and switch between the two volume pots. That's all that's different between the Hudsons.
You could also change the 450R and 1K gains into trimpots if you prefer to change the high and low gain amounts internally.
Any opinions on which of these versions is “best”. I don’t have the 1054 for the pump. Should I order it and be patient or do nine volts suit this circuit? Opinionz?
Finally got around to building this thing. Had to use a daughter board for the transformer. No way it was gonna fit. Sounds cool. Trying some rando germs for Q2. With all the electros this circuit looks like Manhattan Island. Built the 9v version. I may build a switchable voltage dblr later. Thanks
Hey - any chance of the AP version of the broadcast? I love the darker tone it has, and I know it's silicon rather than germanium based, but not sure whether anything else changed
I've got the double footswitch version from Regent Sounds with the extra high cut toggle. If anyone wants to copy it take a wire off Level 3 to the centre lug of a SPST on off on switch. Then on the one side add a 10n cap and on the other a 4.7n cap. Left over legs to ground. Cheers, Ben.
Yeah it is, I like it with a bit more voltage going through it too. But 24v is a bit too much. 12v-18v sounds good to my ear. I just stuck a 2N404A in mine last night. Couldn't find the intended trans. Read that some versions use the 404. Sounds excellent. Have you tried the Smallsound/Bigsound? It has a similar sort of character to my ear. I might like it even more. Both live up to some of the hype I think.
Hey Tom, hows it going. I'm trying a couple of pre-amps over on Tagboardeffects at the mo - the Fender Bassman 5F6 and the Laney Supergroup 100 MKI. Finished the Bassman and it sounds pretty good, just the Laney to finish
Haha, I knew that was you over there. I've been haunting that blog too. I made a Blackout Whetstone because I hate myself. It's pretty rad though. I've heard that the Supergroup Pre on tagboard is pretty great. The Model T Pre is also supposed to be good but I don't think that it drives very hard on its own. Even with two channels. The Bassman sounds cool. I'll look for it.
build with 24v version, bc549c hfe500/ Ger hfe-70 leakage-40, substitute caps:120u>100u, 330u>470u, results works fine and 3 mode sounds great also, I used B10k for low-cut but which is bad idea, it cause the low-end appear at 0 - 3k only, better use log pot for nicer tone range control, thanks for the layout.
That's a neat little layout. Location of cuts under the transformer?
ReplyDeleteThanks for spotting that. Updated.
DeleteThe TY141p needs a bigger spacing that the one in the layout.

ReplyDeleteThe 10R resistor should be 100R.
ReplyDeleteEvery schematic on the web specify 10R.

DeleteYes, you are correct. That resistor is once again 10ohm for both layouts...
DeleteSo, where you lost, Fuzzhead?
ReplyDeletei will fix the 100ohm resistor when I get home from work in a couple of Days. Acces to the blog isn't the best at the moment....
DeleteWILL WAIT FUZZ FRIDAY! =)
DeleteSure! But which fuzz?! Can't find any interesting circuits to draw? any suggestions?

Hi there! Sounds great indeed! I'll take a look for sure but I'm not able to draw anything until friday.
DeleteGreat man thanks ! And take your time, no rush ;-)
DeleteLayouts is now updated with 100ohm resistors.
ReplyDelete10R seemed to be the right value actually.
Delete10R seemed to be the right value actually.
Delete10R is indeed the correct resistor. I've built four of them...

DeleteHe used the ty141 originally because it is spaced larger, and Hudson used to use the larger type of stripboard.

Thanks for the headsup and the link.! I'll alter the layout in a couple of days.
DeleteWould it be possible to do a layout for the dual foot switch version? Duocast on Pedalpcb.

ReplyDeleteAlso the transistor in mine is a 2N404A with 53 hfe and 13 uA leakage (at 22 degrees).
ReplyDeleteHoly ship, this is a mighty fine pedal. Did the 9v layout and using a 18v supply, it sounds amazing and very very loud
