Fuzzhugger Fx Algal Bloom V2 w. blend

Update 201013. Now tagged "On Hold" since there is possible bugs in the schematic.

  1. Built it but something is wrong. Only works on one side of the choke switch. Very loud hum like guitar cable is unplugged. Bloom knob only adds a very loud oscillation.

    1. At a first glance I spot an obvious error, Bloom 2 connection at the right bottom corner should be connected to Bloom 3.
Second, although the orientation of the 2,2uF cap matches the schematic it is the the "wrong" way around since the positive leg usually oriented to the closest power source, in this case Q5. Try to flip it around so the positive leg is connected to the base of Q5.

Other than that I can't see any errors but I'll have a look over the schematic once again.

Does the other controls works as they should?

  2. Made the changes, same issues. I went over it another good time to make sure there were no mistakes. All the other controls seem to work.

  3. 2/3 5/6 is the only position that works.

    1. I think I have to tag this one "on hold". I've been over the schematic several times by now and I can't spot anything odd. The Choke switch looks a bit wonky though...1-2-3 half looks ok as it is a gain boost for Q4. The other half though....doesn't make much sense to me....

  4. Any updates on this one? Any chance for a peek at the schematic etc?

    2. Hey thanks man, I somehow missed this years ago

  5. I built the Tagboard version and it works. I added a 22k resistor to Gain 1 (suggested by mirosol as a mod for V1.) I'm trying to spot differences between the two layouts but all I spotted so far are a couple typos. Voice Sw 1 is connected to the 4.7n and Voice Sw 3 is connected to the 10n. And D2 is power protection so a 1N5817 (Tagboard recommends a 1N4002). Oh, and the voice switch should be an on/on/on. I'll keep looking.

    1. According to the Tag layout the 10r connected to Power 2 should be a 100r. And the 100uf at top center isn't present in that layout. Maybe extra filtering added by Anders. Probably wouldn't effect the sound but it could choke it I guess. Anders? It has also been suggested that a lower pot value be used for the power control. 50k might work as suggested. All of the pots are interactive though so on some settings 100k may be useful here. Love this fuzz but it's an odd duck. All functions work well. Clean is working but I can't tell if it works as intended. Certainly not as dramatic as the Doom Bloom Head function.

    2. Haha, sorry I checked against the handwritten schematic on FSB and noticed that the X2 2.2M resistors should be connected to FET G and the 3.3k resistor should connect to Q1 Source. That would certainly make a difference.

    3. The 10r on Power 2 is correct (according to the schematic), but it doesn't make a huge difference. Power functions a little bit better.

    4. Sorry, I'm sure that this is annoying. Haha, I gather that maybe Anders set the switch up in a different way making the on/off/on work in this case. BUT, I was getting low voltage on Q5 and couldn't understand why. I flipped the transistor 180 degrees and got loads more gain. Could this be correct? It's counterintuitive but it seems like it could possibly be correct. Either way, it sounds rad. Comments, questions, concerns? ...OK, I'm done.

    5. Thanks Tom for dancing with this one. I'll take a closer look and make the necessary changes when I find the time.

    6. Ignore the flipped transistor comment. I misplaced a cap. It should work with the above changes (if you can understand them, haha). A lower Power value would be better. Even a 25K. 100K is too much. Other than that it's pretty heavy. Way more gain than the V1. All the modifications work as they should. Very cool.
