If use a on/off/on then you will have hard clipping/no diode opamp clipping/soft clipping. If you use on/on/on you will have hard clipping/both hard and soft clipping/ soft clipping. The original is on/on/on and i prefer it that way myself, it takes it into jcm tertitory.
From the front. With the "knob" turned fully counter clockwise that would be toward lug one. Typically tied to ground on a volume control. So as you turn toward lug one more signal is dumped to ground.
