Ibanez Fuzz No. 83

And a modified layout with a few tone controls in place of the tone switch.
This one is verified as well.

  1. Have you made one of these? If so, how's the volume? Guess I should just build it and see.

    1. Yes, I have. Sounds pretty good but with a boost up front it really shines, it is almost like an superfuzz without the octaves. Output level is definitely loud enough.

Did some mods for it for some more versitality....omitted the switch and added a Treble and Mid control. If I can find the layout for it I can post it if you want to.

  2. Yes! That'd be great. I'll build it as soon as I get some more 2sk30's. Checked my stash and I only had one left. Thanks dude!

    1. The original had fuzz 1 to ground so the sound was muted totally when fully anti clockwise. I just added a 2,2k liminting resistor to solve that issue, Big Muff has the Sustain wired the same for example. Row H and bottom row is grounded (except for 2,2k/fuzz 1 junction) and so is the emitter of Q2.

it shouldn't be quiet at all, it must be an issue in your build. Which transistor do you use?

  4. Gotcha. That made sense after I looked at it again. I used a 5088. I'm sure something is amiss on my end.

  5. It's looking like I have bad 2sk30's. They're from Small Bear too which is unusual. I found one from Tayda and put it in Q3 and it woke it up. Plenty of volume now just not very fuzzy. Gonna have to order more.

    1. Yeah, I've been through the same thing....Tayda 2sk30's works great but the ones I had from Banzai were junk....

You could do some leg twisting to try other J FETs in the meantime.

    2. I've built this using the second layout with mmb j201's on adapter boards instead of the 2sk30a's and 1n34a's for the diodes. Also tried 2n5457's but preferred the J201's.

It sounds great but is noisy when I'm not playing. Have experimented with the 2n5088 and tried swapping in various lower hfe transistors in it's place. The noise is reduced with these but unfortunately so is the fuzz.

After reading the comment about putting a boost up front, I also built a lovepedal woodrow and tried that. This hasn't helped with the noise either but it takes the fuzz up to a new level of fuzzyness.

Has anyone else experienced any noise with this or perhaps could advise of how to reduce this when not playing?

    3. Have you boxed the circuit up yet? Sometimes, that's all it takes to drop the noise on a pedal down to very tolerable levels. Beyond that, try adding a 100nF cap to F13-G13 for more power filtering, and maybe a 100R resistor between the power supply and the 9V input on the vero. I haven't made this circuit myself so I can't offer much beyond that. Good luck!

    4. Thank you for the suggestions Sebastian. It's not boxed yet, I'll give that a try + extra power filtering and see how it goes.

  6. I added the 100nf filter caps on the fuzz and Woodrow which improved things a little.

More experimenting with transistors which has made a big improvement, it only gets noisy at the extremes of the treble and voice pots now. I ended up switching the 2N5088 for a 2N7000 mosfet and used a 2n2222a in the Woodrow. Seems the 2n5088's were the issue, maybe I have some bad ones.

Very happy with it now. Boxing up next.

    Thanks for the great layout!
