Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal

  1. Hey man, great layout, built it today and it sounds just like it should! Just a couple of things I noticed:

The germanium diodes are obviously D4+D5, not D6+D7 as in the description. The 68K to Q2 collector and IC1 pin 5 should come off 9V not Vref according to the Boss schematic (works either ways, couldn't pinpoint the difference in tone TBH but still). The electrolytic cap in the upper left corner says 1.5nF instead of uF.

And this is more personal preference than anything, but I always advise to at least try LM358s in HM2 clones, RC4558s and TL072s give off too much of a cocked wah tone to me. LM358s are growlier and fuzzier and I feel that fits quite well with the circuit, sounds more like Entombed to me on a clean tone while still doing At The Gates on a dirty amp.

    Otherwise great job!

    1. Thanks for the tip about the LM358s. Got to orfer some to try out. More dirt and fuzz in a HM2? Yes please.

Was a bit unsure about that 68k resistor. Boss factory schematic have it connected to 9v while most other schematic have it connected to Vref. Good to know both works. But I've moved the connection to 9v now...

    2. Great tip on the 358's. Much nastier!

  2. Hi! It's the first time that i want to buil a pedal, but i don't understand so much the schematics, can you help me?

  3. Another distortion down, defo go for the 358's. Need a recommendation for a full on mega metal pedal, the best so far is the DOD FX70C. Cheers Anders, top work as always

  4. As for the 68 k resistor,it works on both ways but it must connected on the 9v.That is the bias voltage for that non inverting input i guess.

  5. Hey Anders,

Hope you're well and that you're fully revovered from the eye surgery you had (sorry, I know that was a bit ago). I was just curious if the 5 knob version has any extra components other than the potentiometer, or if it's the same but used in place of a resistor etc. I ask because I have a board started already and am being lazy lol.

    1. Hey there.
No need to add any components except for the additional "Mid" control. But you need to add a cut and move a cap.

Add a cut at H17. Move down 150nF cap one row to J20/H20. Connect Mid 2 to H21. Mid 1 to High 1 and Low 1. Mid 3 to High 3 and Low 3.

You might want to experiment with resistor and cap values for the Mid gyrator (150nF, 6,8nF, 330ohm, 82k) since the peak is quite close to the High gyrator...

    2. Damn, thanks so much man. I know you're a busy guy, so didn't anticipate such a detailed reply. I'll definitely do as you said and experiment a bit with those cap and resistor values, might even add sockets there. Thanks again!

  6. You could try the LF353. Seems more bandwidth, less noise.

  7. I can use any type of germanium diode for D4-D5 ?

  8. Hey, i've found a mistake in the layout while building it. the top right 10k resistor's top leg should go to row A.
Got it working now, sounds great
