Traced by TOFO. This is a layout for the early big box version with three footswitches. It is based on the russian Big Muff but with more gain, reversed tonestack tone bypass switch, switchable and tunable feedback loop and a diode selector switch for the second clipping stage.
My apartment is going to be decorated with Big Muff variants. Maybe I’ll make a false wall out of them.

ReplyDeleteAny chance of a layout with gain at max/sweet spot, the Tone control completely left out and the 'Timewarp' hardwired to the LED clipping? Just on/off, pregain, volume and a momentary feedback switch/tune control?

ReplyDeleteI really like this. It does all the freak out weirdness stuff but it also has some really good high gain textures. I haven’t even experimented with the transistors and it sounds excellent. The “Trim” function is subtle. I think it’s a Pre gain contour kinda thing. It has a lotta bottom as it’s a Black Russian foundation, or is it a green? Whatever but it can also cut with the time warp function. I may use a latching switch rather than the momentary for the Tone Blast. I’m getting some decent Williamson Raw Power sounds out of the Tone Blast function. Sounds great. The usual oscillation and sloppy up octave stuff is there too. Thanks again.

ReplyDeleteHey TomTom, did you get anything out of the Timewarp switch - mine doesnt do anything. The rest works and sounds great with any NPN transistor but ace with my favourite BC549C
ReplyDeleteI did use 1n5227 zeners instead of 1n4148, cant see it making too much difference tho(??)
ReplyDeleteYeah it gives me a bit of an EQ shift I think and a bit of a rougher distortion. It’s been a couple days but everything seemed to be working. I haven’t boxed it yet. The least responsive feature was the “Trim”. I think it is there to focus the fuzz s little. I’ll check the “Time Warp” again later but as I recall it did what it’s intended to do. (From what I can hear in the demos I’ve listened to).
ReplyDeleteThe thing with "Trim" is that its effectiveness is highly dependent on the input signals impedance (what guitar/pedals you have before it). Higher the impedance, more "effect" you will get. When I saw the layout I immediately thought that a 100k log pot wired like the usual volume might give more constant response.
DeleteCheers!! My trim is pretty responsive; on full you get full on fuzz, back off and the fuzz / volume goes off.

ReplyDeleteIan the Time Warp is working for sure. Can’t exactly explain what it does. Maybe some scooping? Almost reminds me of that evil tone switch on fuzzhead’s Dronestortion. You obviously know what your doing but maybe double check your led orientation. Easy to mix that up. Mine glows very faintly. I think I love this one. It’s so ridiculous.

DeleteIf someone decided that three foot switches were too cramped you could build a remote for the momentary switch. I just tried it. So cool. It would of course cost you an extra two jacks and a separate small enclosure but it works if one were so inclined. DIY JHS red remote.
ReplyDeleteLug 2 of the Feedback pot would go to the sleeve of one jack. Feedback switch from the PCB would connect to the tip. Then connect pin 2 on your momentary switch to the sleeve of a second mono jack. The last connection will be from your momentary to the tip of that mono jack.
I’d never tried this before. It must just short the connection. Cool little mod idea. That way you can have infinite sustain whenever but you wouldn’t need a huge enclosure or have to place the effect somewhere inconvenient on your board.
Finally boxed this in a Hammond octo box that was taking up half my apt. Added a Green Ringer for some up-octave to compliment the sloppy down-octave. Sounds crazy and industrial. I’m getting a tiny bit of squeal when using the tone bypass. Not a big deal. Buffer did nil. Anyway. 🖖

ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I was preying to find. I'm going to build one because
im a massive Boris fan and this is the main fuzz that Takeshi uses with he's multiple stacks of Sunn Model T amps, to get the most frightening sound I've ever heard.
Mainly because he uses them, they go for ridiculous prices now ($800) especially the signed ones ($1000+). The only sane option is just to build this.
I'll let you know how I go
