Way Huge Red Llama

  1. I was looking for an easy build so I threw this one together. I’ve been messing around with it, but I can’t get it working. Looking around at schematics, it seems as though there’s a few different ways to hook up the 4049, and I think that’s why I’m struggling with such a simple circuit. Can you give it a look and see if anything looks obvious to you?

    1. Hmmm, can't spot anything that looks odd.
Decided to build a simple project today so I think I will give this one a try. Will report back how it turns out.

    2. Ok, my build works as it should. Note that the board is 12x9, not 12x10 as described in the first revision of the layout.
      Have you tried another CD4049?
Also you may want to reduce 10M resistor since the Lead switch position is quite noisy although the fuzz itself sounds really good.

    3. Hey Fuzzhead I don’t know if you will see this but I made a layout for the red llama circuit using a cd4069. I Had gotten some fake cd4049 but my cd4069 were real so I made do. I wasn’t sure how to dm you here so I figured I would try to post.

    4. Hi there!
Is the layout verified or do you want me to take a look at it?

  2. What resistor did you use instead of 10M?

  3. I had a crack at this tonight (and used 5m instead of 10m)
It had a serious amount of high pitched whistle going on.
I used the same parts in an anniversary red llama and all was well.
A shame because it sounded great apart from the earsplitting noise🤣

    1. If you have two 5 megs, solder them end to end and you'll have a 10M. Like this
      ---0--0---

    2. I read that lowering the 10m resistor would reduce noise on the high gain setting 🤔

    3. Oh, ok that makes sense. It must just be oscillation from the excessive gain. The Red Llama was one of the first overdrives I ever played. Love it.

    4. I'd be interested so know why this didn't work for me🤔

    5. No two of the Red Llamas I've made, even from the same layout, have worked identically. From what I've read, CD4049 chips are all over the shop spec-wise, so it could just be down to that.

    6. I reused the chip in an anniversary one..i must have made a mistake
